Fernwood Avenue Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
WEEK OF February 20, 2022
Principal's Message
Last week our Superintendent, Dr. Gruccio shared information with you about continuing to follow the Road Forward guidelines as directed by the Governor of New Jersey. Dr. Gruccio's email and letter discussed changes taking place over the next few weeks. Please see her email for those details. Below I am sharing changes that are specific to Fernwood Avenue Middle School.
As of today, there are no shields on tables in the cafeteria and many classroom shields have been removed. Our custodians have worked hard to remove the shields and will continue to remove shields until they are down. Our students were told that if they still would like a protective shield in the cafeteria or in any class, they will be available for their use. Students may let their teachers know and the front office will be contacted. With our students moving from class to class, we will provide a desk shield, upon student request, depending on whether the student is in the classroom, cafeteria, or other location.
In the cafeteria, we are still asking students to maintain assigned seats and one seat of space between themselves and other students for safe distancing while eating lunch. If anyone is having any problem at all, they should let a teacher know and inform our Assistant Principals, Mr. Locantora and Dr. Zabelski.
Finally, with respect to masks, on March 7, 2022, they will be optional in school. Students and teachers may continue to wear a mask. It is optional and open to personal preference and protection. One location that mask wearing will remain is on buses. This is still mandatory and all must wear masks on the bus until further notice. This order comes from the Federal Government and it is not at the school's discretion. This has been a long two years for us all. Hopefully this is a step towards normalcy for all students and teachers.
Thank you for your support!
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
District Strings Festival
Fernwood orchestra students attended the District Strings Festival at EHTHS on Thursday, February 17th! The event was made up of Fernwood orchestra, Alder orchestra and EHTHS Orchestra. There were numerous "challenges" in the morning where orchestra students had to demonstrate who could play fastest, ugliest sound and many more fun competitions. Then students had an orchestra performance with guest conductor, Hayden DeNesha. The concert was incredible and many memories were made. We cannot wait til next year!

Girls Basketball
The Girl’s Basketball team defeated Buena on last Friday afternoon. Seven Lady Eagles scored points this game! Layla Wallace, Kayli McNulty, Christina Massey, and Jamie Decker helped out offensively, each scoring at least one basket each. Great rebounding by Caroline O’Donnell and Cristal Nunez led to numerous resets of our offense, which allowed us to regroup and reset for good looks at the basket! A strong 2-3 defense helped to slow down Buena’s offensive attack. What was most notable, however, was the sincere sportsmanship all 12 Fernwood girls showed toward a rebuilding Buena team! It was heartwarming to hear our girls clap and cheer on the opponent when Buena made baskets as the game progressed!
The Girl’s Basketball team defeated Hammonton with a score of 26-14. After a slow first quarter, the kids regrouped and a tough, aggressive defense shut Hammonton’s offense down almost immediately. Huge shout out to Katie Colella whose defensive intensity became contagious throughout the entire Fernwood team. She and Mariah Newman’s tag team at the top of the key stopped Hammonton’s drives. Taison Parker, Sam Battersby, Caitlin Harding, and Kayden Senior relentless battle under the boards for numerous rebounds was vital to our offensive and defensive game! After the pace of the game increased and we played our up tempo style basketball, the girls could not be stopped. Fabulous passing and quick transitions led to easy baskets and Hammonton could not contend! Christina Massey, Caroline O’Donnell, Layla Wallace, and Kayli McNulty helped keep the speed throughout the game’s substitutions. Amazing teamwork by all Lady Eagles!! It was a wonderful way to end our last home game of the season!
