Message from the Principal
Children should arrive on time and attend school every day. According to Education Code, chronic absenteeism is when a student is absent 10% or more of the school days in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date. Chronic absenteeism includes all absences – excused and unexcused – and is an important measure because excessive absences negatively impact academic achievement and student engagement. [EC 60901]. This information can also be found in the Parent's Rights Handbook on page 4.
A student will be classified as truant if they are tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year. Missing school or being late causes students to miss valuable instructional time. Please help your child be a successful learner by bringing him/her to school on time and every day (except when they are ill or have extenuating circumstances.). Every effort should be made to schedule appointments and trips when school is not in session.
If a child must miss 5 -14 days, he/she can request an Independent Study. However, requests must be made two weeks in advance to the office and teacher. Please contact Danielle Enos at enosd@unionsd.org if you have any questions.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
Mary Katayama,
Principal
Message from The 2022 Walk-A-Thon Committee
Thank you to all the amazing volunteers, sponsors, staff and families who helped make our Fall 2022 Walk-a-thon an “astronomical” success! We had 80% of the student body turn out and participate, marked thousands of laps, sent 500 friends to Area 51, won 100+ baked goods in the cakewalk, painted 217 faces, styled 216 crazy hair do-s, took hundreds of photos with family and friends, and raffled off 61 fun items! Thank you for all of your efforts to work shifts, bake goodies, make pledges, buy tickets, donate items for the raffle, and loan out tables and pop ups – we couldn’t have done it without you.
Total raised during our pledge drive = $130,000
Our pledge goal was set at $110,000. We far exceeded our goal which is incredible! We are so fortunate to have such a supportive community. The donations received are so valuable to help fund student programs, teacher allocations, school and community programs, and host special events to provide a well-rounded education for our Carlton students. And the results are in for the winning classes......Mr. Ahn’s class won for highest class participation and Mrs. Lamour’s class won for highest pledges raised. Each class will get a pizza OR ice cream party.
Thank you to all of our corporate and family supporters. Thank you to the many staff members who came out to help at registration and support the event, as well as all the high school and middle school volunteers. And a very special thank you to all of our Booth Managers who helped the event run smoothly: Meena Iwanaga-Raffle, Tiffany White-Lap Markers, Desiree Jones-Cakewalk, Swaroop Ramachandra-Photo Booth, Julia Zonova-Preschool, Allison Reeder-Track Water Station, Amy Piech-Face Painting, Dyan Gibson-Crazy Hair, Courtney Bonin-Lap Prizes, Janelle Carmassi-Area 51, Justin Pyle-Event Photographer, and our mascot, Carl the Cougar.

Project Cornerstone - November Book
This month the ABC volunteers will be reading the book Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon by Patty Lovell. The author reminds the reader to be proud of who they are and what they can do. This book helps students learn about the power of a positive attitude about oneself and a growth mindset. Here are some informational slides and a link to the story.
