Progress Report Newsletter, May 2017

Field Day is coming, Friday, May 5!

Super excited about our upcoming Field Day! Special thanks to our FABULOUS PTO for their hard work in planning a special event for our school on this day!

Grade levels are each wearing their own special color to build teamwork and help make the day run smoothly. Be sure to remember!

Kdg - White

1st - Red

2nd - Blue

3rd - Gray

4th - Tie Dye

5th - Yellow

We are keeping a close eye on the forecast. Right now it seems like a day that may need layers (or a change of clothes or shoes). Monday, May 8 is our most likely "rain out date" if a change of plans is suddenly needed.

Volunteers are still needed for the day's events. Please call Elm Street if you can lend a hand by working an event during part or all of Field Day!

Excited for the fun to begin!

End of Year Dates - Mark your calendars!

The days of May are packed with many upcoming events! Please be sure to examine the End of Year Dates to Remember and give us a call at school if you have any questions about what awaits. We look forward to making these memories together! If you missed seeing the list of dates in Eagle Folders, take a look at the link here.

Summer Chromebook Opt In

Parents of CCSS students can opt for students in Grades 3-5 to have and use their school Chromebook over the summer. The link below includes the user agreement and important information about Chromebook use and care during the summer months. Students whose parents "opt in" and agree to the Chromebook summer use requirements will not be required to turn in their device at the end of the school year. Students whose parents do not agree to summer use will be required to turn in their Chromebook device and charger near the end of May. Parents of 3rd-5th graders, please complete the Summer Chromebook Checkout form to indicate your preference for your child and his or her device for the upcoming summer.

Online Safety is important!

As summer approaches and there is a bit more unstructured time in our children's days, it is a good time for us all to remember the importance of safety, particularly online safety. As our lives continue to become more and more digital, we must all remember the importance of safe choices online.

Our school chromebooks are equipped with GoGuardian in addition to firewalls and other restrictions to various forms of internet use on campus. However, even with these safeguards in place, it is still important to remind students of safe and effective use of electronic devices. Parents are encouraged to regularly supervise, monitor, and check the history of devices children are using. From cyberbullying to revealing unsafe personal information, it is critical that we all take an active role in safeguarding our children online.

Lieutenant Jamie Hixson with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office talks with fifth graders about online safety as part of the S.A.F.E. program each year at Elm Street. In addition, during her parent presentations at Elm Street over the years, she has regularly encouraged parents to know their children's passwords. It is not spying, it is safeguarding as a part of good parenting.

Here is a helpful link to Kids.gov a resource with some safety reminders, videos, and key questions to talk with your children about with regard to online safety.

Coming Soon - Rising Eagle Google Classrooms!

Coming soon to an electronic device near you....

RISING EAGLE GOOGLE CLASSROOMS!

In preparation for the summer ahead, teachers are working to build a few helpful summer resources, including online summer learning links, as well as fun summer learning activities or project ideas into a new google classroom. Each grade level will have a Rising Eagle Google Classroom for their upcoming students. While students are certainly not required to take part in any activities shared in the classroom, they are invited to join in these opportunities for ongoing learning in fun ways. Our goal is to help prevent any "summer slide" in learning by engaging students in thinking moments from time to time throughout the summer. Stay tuned for more details!

Our Eagle Walk will end in the fifth grade building, where students can find the hand-painted tile they created as a fifth grader at Elm Street. Athletes compete at Special Olympics at NHS

Our students represented us well at Special Olympics held at Newnan High School on May 2. Eagles showed courage, perseverance, and good sportsmanship in their competitive events. In addition to the athletic events, students enjoyed interacting with animals, dancing, and more.

First and second grade classes lined the hallway from the lobby to the bus zone to cheer on the parade of athletes as they made their way to load their bus and head to the big event! A quick video clip and some photos appear below.

Milestones Assessments - Great Student Effort!

Congratulations 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders on your hard work during our recent Georgia Milestones Assessments! No principal, assistant principal, or teacher could be more proud of the effort given by so many of our students. Our students worked hard, used their scratch paper when needed, and made full use of the time available to them. I believe we gave it our collective "all" during the tests. Thank you, parents, for your support of your children during the important state assessment season as well. Once all results have arrived from state officials, they will be shared with parents and students.

Thank you Coach Baker and Mr. Tate for hosting our 24KT Magic Celebration after the completion of Milestones as well! So proud of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who earned that extra time with you!

Loved our Pep Rally and the 24KT Milestones Magic!
