Fifth Grade Focus
Weekly News from ASPIRE 5th Grade! (Volume 17-18, Issue 11)
Heritage Day
During the next two weeks we will be focusing on history, heritage, cultural differences, and family legacies in Humanities. We are also analyzing primary and secondary sources as historians. On Heritage Day we would like the students to investigate important primary and secondary sources from a mystery family’s past. After they have analyzed the sources, they will attempt to make deductions about the family’s heritage.
We need your help - we would like you and your child to collect some primary and secondary sources as well as artifacts about your family. You might want to include documents from more than one generation of your family. Please send them to school by Wednesday, November 15th. Friday, November 17th, is Heritage Day at Glenhope. We would like to invite you to our Humanities class that day (from 9:10-10:40) to join us in our search through history.
Examples of documents you might bring (Please do NOT send originals - copies are fine):
Primary Sources
Marriage license
Birth certificates
Letters
Photos
Recordings with family members
Video clips (upload to your child’s drive)
Artifacts (pictures of)
etc.
Secondary Sources
Newspaper articles about family members
Programs from events
Invitations
etc.
The sources you send to school will be placed in a shoebox. All of the shoeboxes will then be numbered. On Friday we will pass out the shoeboxes and each group will get to “think like a historian” as they observe and analyze the sources in the shoeboxes and make deductions about the family represented by the items in the box!
If you have participated with us in the past, we hope you enjoy having new conversations with your current 5th grader. Feel free to use the same box and artifacts if you still have them. Thanks for helping us have a fun experience on Heritage Day!

Destination Imagination - Volunteer Needed
We received this request from 4th grade ASPIRE parent, Marla Mundheim:
I am managing a team of 4th grade A.S.P.I.R.E. students for Destination Imagination. As you may be aware, our school district requires that each team supply an appraiser for the tournament. i have no leads on an appraiser for this year, and someone suggested contacting the school principal for ideas. I understand if you don’t have any, but thought I would give it a try. Is there anyone that you know of who would like to volunteer to be our appraiser this year? It requires attending a truing on January 27th from 8am to 1pm in Grand Prairie, and then being available for the tournament all day on February 24th. The tournament will be at Haltom High School again this year. Thanks for any help that you are able to provide.
