MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
I am pleased to be able to announce that as a school we have met our Parent Engagement goal in the School Plan and over 70% of families attended three or more events. Our Three Star Family Dinner is Wednesday, May 31st at 6:00 p.m. All the families who have attended 3 or more school events or activities will be honored that evening and treated to a sit-down dinner! Next year's goal will be to have 70% or more of families being honored at a Five-Star Family dinner!
Best Regards,
Theresa Lambert

PROMOTION CEREMONY FOR 5TH GRADE
This year our 5th grade students will use the school colors: royal blue and silver/grey. It is your decision how to combine the colors.
Dress Code
Research has found a high correlation between the way children dress and their behavior in school. Students are to dress appropriately for participation and safety in a variety of school activities. Personal cleanliness and neatness are expected. We understand that at times, it may be difficult because of current style and trends, but the dress code contributes to an orderly and focused learning environment. A dress code also helps students develop standards for their personal appearance.
Appropriate Attire
Please consider that our students are young and many of the current fashion trends are geared to teenagers who have a different maturity level and a different perspective on life. We want our students to be children, not smaller replicas of their teenage siblings.
- Above all, consider comfort and the ability to run and play.
- Students need a sweater, sweatshirt or jacket for cooler weather.
- Make sure that first/last name and room number are somewhere on the label of outerwear.
Inappropriate Attire
- Tank tops with thin (less than one inch) straps. No strapless or spaghetti strap type tops.
- No “basketball” or muscle man tee shirts unless under another shirt.
- Skirts shorter than mid-thigh.
- Pants with waistbands not worn at waist. A belt must be worn if pants cannot stay at/above hips.
- Backless sandals, flip-flops, or shoes with no backs. Shoes must be attached to feet and suitable for running. This is a safety feature.
- Too short shorts. Shorts must be at fingertip length when arms are held at sides.
- See-through, fishnet blouses/shirts or bare midriffs (tops must meet whatever is worn on the bottom, covering torso); no off-shoulder tops.
- Clothing with offensive pictures or writing. These include reference to drugs, alcohol, skeletons, certain nationalities, religions and violence.
- Swim/beachwear and exercise wear.
- Hats, caps and sunglasses inside classrooms or buildings (unless there is a medical reason).
- Holes, rips or tears in clothing.
- Makeup should not be worn to school. Save something for middle school!
- No visible tattoos of any kind.
- Chains of any kind and clothing or jewelry with protrusions that could be considered dangerous.
Students who come to school wearing inappropriate clothing will be asked to contact a parent to bring a change of clothing to school. The school principal and/or classroom teacher will determine appropriate school dress.

FROM THE DISTRICT
Norovirus outbreak: Wash hands and stay healthy!
This particular illness is highly contagious, and symptoms do not start until 1 to 2 days after exposure. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, poor appetite, and headache. It is spread primarily through handling items or touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and by being next to a vomiting individual.
Handwashing and keeping surfaces clean is crucial to preventing infection. District Health Services staff members are stressing the importance of frequent vigorous hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds, and especially after using the toilet. Younger students may need a lesson or demonstration. Please see the link for proper handwashing technique. https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/videos.html. Unfortunately, hand sanitizers and alcohol rubs are not effective against norovirus.
Anyone ill with GI symptoms should remain home until at least 48 hours after they are well. Staying home for 48 hours and continued handwashing beyond that period is critical to prevent further spread.
“Star” thoughts about Boundary Options A and B through May 28th
The Mountain View Whisman School District is in the midst of a community-wide process to make adjustments to elementary school boundaries intended to relieve overcrowding at some schools and provide for the opening of Slater Elementary in 2019-20.
Last spring, we formed the Student Attendance Areas Task Force, which is composed of parents, staff and community members. They have been reviewing District demographic data and working to produce boundary scenarios. Board of Trustees will consider the final scenarios on June 1, 2017 and approve one of them on June 15, 2017.
To view the maps and information about boundaries, please click on www.mvwsd.org/boundaries.
Before this vote, the District wants to engage with you through Thoughtexchange, an online platform that facilitates the exchange of ideas. Parents, staff and community members have contributed 1,400 comments about boundary options A and B. Next, is the Star step.
- Star (May 19th to May 28th): In this step, please review ideas from participants and put stars next to the ideas you like best.
- Discover (week of June 15th): At the Board meeting, we will share the community results.
