Happy Hanukkah!
The staff at Pearl Buck Elementary would like to extend our warmest thoughts to our families celebrating Hanukkah, which begins on Sunday, December 6th.
Please Help Decorate our Giving Tree
With the start of the holiday season, we have assembled our Giving Tree, located in the main lobby of Pearl Buck. Throughout December, we will be collecting new hats, scarves, pairs of mittens, warm gloves and warm socks. Please consider decorating our Giving Tree by placing a donated item on the branches. We hope to have a fully adorned tree before December 23rd. All items will be donated to local charities.
Upper Lot/Lower Lot
Please use only the upper lot for drop-off and pick-up of your child. This keeps the lower lot clear for our buses and vans. Thanks for your cooperation.
4th Grade Blasts-Off into Thanksgiving
Just before Thanksgiving, our fourth grade students enjoyed a rocket-building event. Working with partners from each homeroom, the teams each created a construction-paper rocket fuselage and then placed water and an effervescent tablet within a film canister to create an engine to shoot the rockets into the air. Some blasted into a spectacular 'splat' while others travelled as high as 8 feet! It was messy, but it sure was fun!!

Musings from the Cleafland Zoo
Mr. Knight recently asked his students to develop an informative writing piece based upon a creature created from leaves. Below are a few examples of the rapscallions one can find at the Cleafland Zoo.
Five Headed Wind Guster
The Five-Headed Wind Guster lives in South Africa with his many friends. His features are he can shoot lasers out of his eyes. With his huge wing on his head he can fly 100 feet in the air. The size of the Five Headed Wind Guster is three feet tall and two feet wide. He eats tadpoles, baby mice and baby rabbits.
Dragonosaurus
A dragonosaurus is kind of a dragon. It lives in a dragonosaurus forest. It is long like a pencil and as tall as a fourth grade class table. He is scared of spiders, insects and squirrels. A dragonosaurus eats snails, turtles, plants and fish. He is brown, but his feet are orange. He also has a tiny tail that is brown. The dragonosaurus breaths out fire where there is not a lot of trees.
The Fire Breathing Bird
The fire breathing bird comes from the elements of rocks and fire. It lives only in Mexico. It can be destroyed by water so it drinks hot sauce and eats peppers so it can breath fire. This strange bird is flightless, but it is deadly. It's 5 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds. It has big red eyes and the rest of it is red, orange, green and black. It can run 20 miles per hour. That is all scientists know about this deadly bird.
Tower Time!
First graders were up to the architectural challenge of designing and building towers from 3-D shapes. The math activity was connected to working with shapes and patterns. Children constructed models using 3-D shapes to determine which shapes can stack, and why their design worked, or why it did not work.
