Happy Friday, Lake Bluff multilingual families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful week. My favorite part of the week was the school district's Wednesday clinic for the COVID vaccine. It felt good to visit with so many families and to cheer on students as they received their first dose. For those that came last Wednesday, the second dose will be at the same time on Wednesday, December 1.

Also, get ready for colder weather! It looks like our first snow might come today or Sunday. At my house, we are scrambling to find all of our warm coats, mittens, and hats, with some success.

A reminder that next week is a short week; there is no school on Friday, November 19.

Read on for information about:

  • Pebble Go and Britannica Online resources for research and at-home reading
  • Job Opening at Lake Bluff: Multilingual Learner Aide
  • Lunch menu

Lake Bluff Research Shelf: Pebble Go and Britannica Online

One of my favorite resources to use with students is the Lake Bluff Library Media Center Reference Shelf. If you go to the Lake Bluff School web site, you can click on Library Media Center. There you can can click on Reference Shelf, which contains many great resources for students to do research.

Pebble Go (see above) is a fantastic resource for primary students and early English readers (username: bluff, password: school). Students can click on the tabs to learn information about animals, science, biographies, and social studies. Pebble Go reads the text to you. Each page also has a link to pictures or short video clips, too! It is a great resource to build background information, research for nonfiction writing, or just read at home! There are so many topics to chose from: even as a grown-up, I sometimes find myself getting lost learning about the coelacanth (fish), xuanhanosaurus (dinosaur), or other animals I've never heard of before!

Another great resource on the Reference Shelf for older students is Britannica Online (see below). Use the "Search" button at the top to find a topic. Then use the "Reading Level" chooser to select a reading level, and use the globe icon on the right to translate the article into a different language.
