Why has Harper Lee included Miss Maudie as a main character?

Student Response:

Harper Lee included Miss Maudie as a main character in the novel, because she plays a very special role in the story. Miss Maudie also seems to know everybody's business and bacround on them. She also seems to spend more time with the kids than their own parents do."Atticus don't ever do anything to Jem and me in the house that he don't do in the yard."Miss Maudie had a close bond with scout as well."But Jem and dill drove me closer to her with their behavior." Miss Maudie wasn't just a neighbor to the the children either."She was our friend."
