Shoot for the Moon, Even if you miss you’ll hit the stars!
Writing Works by Brandon White
The Sun has many layers, the core is nearly 3,000 times hotter than the surface. When gases burn, heat and light are produced. Sunspots are colder than the yellow and orange areas, but you would still die on it. The Sun the can throw huge loops of hot gas into space. They are enormous explosions- even bigger than Earth!
Here’s a tutorial of how I made this paragraph. I used the hand as a mentor. The main idea is the Sun is really hot and deadly. The topic sentence is the The Sun is the hottest thing in our solar system. One detail is the Sun throws huge loops of hot gas. The second detail is sunspots are colder than the yellow and orange areas, but you would still did long before you could touch the Sun. The third detail is the huge loops of gases are enormous explosions sometimes even bigger than Earth!
MATH MENTORS share by Tim & Tess, Math Mentors
In Mr. Derouin's third grade class, in math we have been learning convenient ways to solve multi digit word problems. In the number, corner we have been collecting minutes and hours. We have been learning fractions and vocabulary Words for example, Mass that stands for weight and equivalent that means equal. Another fun thing, we have been doing in math is learning convenient ways to add and subtract. Another
thing that I want to eagerly share with you is one of the strategies we use called the number line.
Another strategy I want to share with you is algorithm
129

+_______
185
100+20+9+50+6= 185
We also have to double check our work, to know it’s correct. Algorithm is best for double checking. We are excited to see how much we are growing! 20 out of 20 students love our new math program Here’s an anchor chart we can use to help use try new strategies!!
Problems And Solutions By Hannah V and Hannah A
We have been working on figuring out solutions for problems that have been happening in our class or that could happen in other classes. Here are some of our suggestions to help.
Playing With Sticky Notes
The first problem is kids are playing with sticky notes and not doing what they're supposed to be doing in class. Here are our solutions. For example:if it is reading time and you are playing with your sticky notes put them behind you so you don’t see it and you won’t play with it. Or give it to your friend and tell them to give them to you when you need to write something down. The last thing is leave it in your browsing box and take them out when you need to write something down.
Getting Distracted By A Pencil
Some kids are playing with their pencils so they should ask their friends to remind them to stop playing with it whenever they are. Or they could put it away in a spot they won’t take it out. Or maybe put a sticky note on it that says not to play with it.
Talking While The Teacher Is Talking
Lots of kids are talking while the teacher is talking. That needs to stop. Here are some ways it could stop. Your friend could remind you not to. You can write it down and put it somewhere where you would look. Or every time you do it you should try remember we could lose a marble.
If Someone Is Being Mean To You
If someone is making fun of you, there are three things you can do about it. Our first solution is say if someone called you clumsy you can agree with them and say this “ Yeah you’r right I am clumsy.” And this is our second reason, you can make a joke with it by saying “ I’m so clumsy that I can trip over a feather.” This is our last solution just ignore that person. But if they keep bullying you and you tried all of those solutions you should probably tell an adult especially let your teacher know.
Thank you for reading problems and solutions.
Morning Meeting, by Kyle E
Morning Meeting is a way to come together as a community! We greet each other by name, make eye contact, shake hands and smile at each other. What a great way to start our day.
In meeting we have been doing “world Greetings” we have learned to say “good morning”, “how are you? “ as well as feelings: good, tired, hungry and sad. In some new languages. The languages we have practiced have been Chinese : Ni hao ma “ How are you?” and Hao we have also practiced French, German and Portuguese. Below is a chart of some greetings.
After our greetings we have a share and an activity. The shares can be what did you do last weekend? Or they can be a reflection on what we want to grow in or even a problem we have and asking for suggestions to solve them.
Then we get up and move in an activity. My favorite is Medusa. Where you have to freeze if someone catches your eye!
Hope you enjoyed learning about our morning meeting.

Interview by Shiven Joshi “Looking at Growth”
l interviewed Anna Lowell and here are her responses
S.J: How do you feel you’ve changed from the beginning of the year to now?
A.L: I feel I’ve changed because I learned more neat strategies.
S.J: How have using two strategies been helpful?
A.L: Because l tend to find using 1 strategy I tend to get it wrong but using two strategies I usually get it right.
S.J: What is your favorite math strategy?
A.L: Number line because most of the time you get it right and it’s not a waste of time.
S.J: What is your favorite math game?
A.L: Round ball tens because I like basketball and this game involves basketball.
S.J: That’s the end of this interview. Thank you for your responses.
I interviewed Brody Stoler here’s what he has to say
S.J: How do you feel you’ve changed from the beginning of the year to now?
B.S: I feel I’ve changed because I learned a lot more strategies and learning addition and subtraction algorithm which most of the times gives me the right answer.
S.J: How have using two strategies been helpful?
B.S: It’s helped me because l would always get the problem right.
S.J: What’s your favorite math game?
B.S: Carrot grab because tens are easy to count by and it’s fun.
S.J: What’s your favorite math strategy why?
B.S: My favorite math strategy is algorithm and using the break apart method because you can do it fast and most of the time you get it right and doesn’t waste your time. I have learned that it's important to double check your work! So you don't get a small mistake that ruins the whole thing.
That’s the end of this interview.
PAWS POUNCE! By Mason Karpovich
What paws do for us in school and class
Paws is a sticker program used at LMES to teach students important skills like respect, kindness and manners. It was started by wonderful Mr. Derouin, our teacher with the school guidance counselor Ms. Monroe and the members of the Safe School Climate Committee. Each month for behaviors that show kindness and respect Mr. Wermuth our Principal will tell us what the weeks focus will be. The teachers are looking for kind and responsible kids.Even if you’re not in their class if you do a good deed or act in a good way you can get rewarded with a sticker .When you do kind acts you and get a sticker you should be proud and be ready to tell your friends and family about why you got it. Because of this program kids learn kindness at Long Meadow Elementary school.
How to get a paw:
Help your teacher
Use your manners

Opinion Piece: Pro & Con for School Uniforms

Schools should have uniforms
by Kendra
I think that we should have uniforms in school because it’s less expensive for our parents. They will only have to buy clothes for the weekend and vacations. Also, no one will make fun of your clothes and say unkind things or judge you based on how you are dressed. Also, it would help teachers and other students recognize when a person belongs or doesn't belong in the school so they would stand out a lot. Finally, in the morning you won’t have to deal with picking out clothes and making parents crazy by running late. Nope! It’s all because I have a uniform!
In conclusion, you have learned about school uniforms and how they can change people's lives, you also read my examples. I hope you agree!

Opinion: Con
by Stevie Bennett
Should schools have uniforms? My answer is a definite “No.” In my opinion schools shouldn’t have uniforms because students should be able to express themselves and be creative without someone telling them how to look or what to wear. By choosing colors and getting to wear what they want students can express themselves. Also siblings could share clothes that the older siblings grew out of. That saves money for other things. Also uniforms can be restrictive and uncomfortable to wear, especially in the warmer weather. This is why I think schools should have no uniforms. If I had to wear a school uniform I would not be as happy as I am now.
