Next week marks the beginning of several state-level assessments including our fourth and fifth graders taking part in our Smarter Balanced assessments in reading and math. These are exams related to last school year (20/21) and will not include the normal writing or science portions of state exams. In addition, our first and second grade students will be participating in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). This is a multiple-choice assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. Our district uses the CogAT as a group-administered aptitude test to determine if students qualify for our Highly Capable program. Below is our schedule for testing next week with additional information related to each assessment.

  • Monday, October 25th – First and Second Graders participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) within their classrooms. This test will be proctored by a district employee with the help of your child's teacher.
  • Tuesday, October 26th – Fourth and Fifth Graders participate in the reading portion of the WA Smarter Balanced assessments
  • Wednesday, October 27th – Fourth and Fifth Graders participate in the math portion of the WA Smarter Balanced assessments

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and a focus for us here at Monroe. As part of our daily curriculum, we provide specific social-emotional learning and infuse our bullying prevention lessons within our daily opportunities, including our school’s morning announcements. More specifically, we are working through five key learnings: Treat Everyone with Respect, What to Do If You’re Bullied, Protect Yourself from Cyberbullying, Stand Up for Others, and Get Involved. Below is a recent snapshot of our Lost & Found. It is actually quite good for this time of the year as jackets and sweatshirts have a habit of becoming lost in the midst of fall temperatures. If your child is missing a jacket, sweatshirt, water bottle etc., the first place to look is their locker. That noted, our Lost & Found displays misplaced items as classes walk by these racks on a daily basis. To further help with retrieval, we will roll our lost and found racks out to our front entry each Friday at dismissal.
