The 400 meter freestyle is a swimming timed race. A clock starts at the sound of the horn and the clock stops at the end of the 400 meters. The 400 meters are equivalent to eight 50 Meter Olympic swimming pools. This is a long swimming race because it is measured in meters instead of yards. The type of swimming a swimmer can do is any form of front swimming. Some part of the swimmers body must break the water. Most swimmers do the front crawl because it is the fastest.
The Compare
Men and women do not compete in the same races. Women use to be faster than men, since they were lighter. Now men are surpassing women with their strength and the new swimsuits, that glide against the water. By comparing the two times of men and women, we can see the year men can surpass women and make conclusions about the two.
The Goal
Using the data tables and line of best fit, I can predict which gender can surpass the other. This will keep on going into the future and the two genders will grow apart throughout the years. I can see if the Men or Women are better then the other and how much they have changed throughout the years.
The Prediction
Women and men will never have the same times because women will never surpass the men. This is evident in my graphs, when you observe that the slopes are causing the lines to move apart over time. Both genders are improving as shown by the two negative slopes which show that times are decreasing. Men's times are decreasing at a faster rate then the women. Before the Olympics, the year 1875 is when the men and women's times intercept. Since the 400 meter freestyle did not start till 1896 and women did not start till 1920's. Women were actually faster then men. Women got 274, while men got 326.8. Over time men became faster then women and surpassed them of their times.
Data 400M Freestyle
The data table starts the year 1976 and goes every four years in list one. List two has the men's times in total seconds and list three has women's time in total seconds.

Scatter Plot
The blue squares represent the Male competitors and the pink X's represent the Women competitors.
Linear Regression (Line of Best Fit)
The blue squares with the blue line of best fit represent the men competitors that are the 400 meter freestyle Olympic gold medalists. The pink X's with the pink line of best fit represent the female competitors that are also the 400 meter freestyle Olympic gold medalists.
The Intersection
The intersection shows how the men are surpassing the women. The men surpassed the women in 1875, but since the Olympic 400 meter freestyle did not start then, the men have always been faster than women. Having the line be more negative means that the men are faster then the women. The competitors should get the lowest time they can to be the best in the 400 meter freestyle. As shown on the blue line, the men are much faster than the red line, the women.
The X Coordinate
The independent variable is the year of the Olympic 400 meter freestyle. The year 1875 is when men surpassed women. Since the Olympic 400 meter freestyle was not an event at that time, men have already surpassed the women of the Olympic 400 meter freestyle. The men are already faster then the women since the beginning.
The Y Coordinate
The dependent variable is the times of the men and women athletes. These times are converted into seconds. If the time was 4 minutes and 25 seconds, it would be converted into 265 seconds. The time of the men Olympic gold medalist will decrease faster as years go by, while women will likely decrease slower then men. The year men surpassed women was 1875, therefore men were already faster than women.
