Assessment of Reading Fluency Using

Accuracy, Rate, and Prosody with Dr. Paula Schwanenflugel

Dr. Paula Schwanenflugel

  • Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia
  • Does research of the assessment of reading fluency using a spectrographic scale
  • While doing research found out that when teachers assess literacy, they often do not focus on prosody

What is a Spectrographic Scale?

  • The spectrographic scale takes the sound representation and creates a visual representation that allows people to more easily examine what is going on with things like pitch, pausing, duration, and amplitude/loudness
  • The spectrograph measures the pitch, pausing, duration, and amplitude/loudness of someones voice
  • The pitch track goes up and down with the voice while someone is reading

For Teachers

  • Instead of using the spectrographic scale, they should use the Comprehension Oral Reading Fluency Scale (CORFS)
  • This was created from research done with the spectrograph which identified typical patterns in prosody in beginning and advanced readers
  • This scale has been used with researchers, not yet teachers

For Parents

  • When listening to their child read, they should tell them to read a passage again and give it the right expression
  • They should talk to their child about expression
  • Parents should read expressively to their own children

For Principals

  • When selecting assessments for teachers to do they should evaluate them and see if they have a section for expression

For Policy Makers

  • Tell them that the new Common Core State Standards addresses expressiveness
