Rules for Operations with Integers
By: Valeria Villalobos
Adding Integers
1. When the signs are the same you are going to leave the sign as it is.
2. When the signs are different you need to subtract the smaller number from the larger one. Stay with the sign of the greatest number.
Examples:
-7+(-3)=-10
6+5=11
3+(-2)=1
Subtracting Integers
1. If you have two numbers with the same sign you add and stay with the sign.
2.if you have two numbers with different signs you subtract and stay with the sign of the largest integer.
Examples:
7-5=2
-2-6=-8
9-5=4
Multiplying Integers
1.When the integers have the same sign you the answer is positive.
2.When the integers have different signs the answer is negative.
Examples:
2x4=8
-4x6=-24
-7x-4=28
Dividing Integers
1.When the integers have the same sign the answer is positive.
2.When the integers have different sign the answer is negative.
Examples:
40÷2=20
-18÷3=-6
10÷5=2
