WLWV Community Update
West Linn-Wilsonville School District news for Nov. 13
WLWV Middle Schools Participate in Unified Soccer Jamboree
West Linn-Wilsonville middle schools took part in one of their favorite activities of the school year on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Rosemont Ridge Middle School hosted WLWV's Unified Soccer Jamboree, with teams from Rosemont, Wood, Athey Creek, and Meridian Creek middle schools participating in a night of friendly soccer and sportmanship.
Unified Soccer is an inclusive sports program that unites Special Olympics athletes (students with intellectual abilities) with partners (students without intellectual disabilities) as teammates. Middle school students braved the cold in what was a fun and exciting time for everyone.
Inclement Weather Information
The School District will also notify parents via FlashAlert as well as via ListServ. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to both services if they haven't already. Even if you have previously subscribed to FlashAlert, it is important that you check your subscriptions as the FlashAlert service routinely removes subscriptions that have not been recently updated. Please note that FlashAlert is not a West Linn-Wilsonville system and the district can only provide limited help. Families are encouraged to consider getting the free FlashAlert Messenger app from the Apple AppStore or Google PlayStore.
The School District makes inclement weather decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision to open, close, or delay the start of school is made for the entire West Linn-Wilsonville School District. That means that while inclement weather conditions might occur in only certain areas of the district, the decision to close or delay the start of school will be made for all schools. Families will also be notified when the District elects to utilize snow routes due to inclement weather.

Education Foundation Kicks Off Honor Our Teachers (HOT) Campaign
Each year from November until Winter Break, the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation celebrates the season of gratitude with the Honor Our Teachers campaign.
The Honor Our Teachers (HOT) campaign provides a special way for you to share your appreciation for our dedicated educators. By making a donation to the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation, you can thank our teachers and staff. They will receive a special certificate of recognition to hang in their classroom or office. They will also receive a notification that your gift was made in their honor. It’s an exciting way to celebrate our teachers and staff.
With a donation of $250 or more, the Foundation will also include a $10 gift card to each teacher or staff member you honor (up to 4). The gift cards are funded by a generous grant, so your total tax-deductible donation can be used by the Foundation to help fund additional teaching positions to our schools.
The West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to hire new teachers, maintain effective class sizes, and foster excellence in the WLWV School District.
MAP Looks to Raise Money for Student Instruments
Music and Arts Partners has formed the Lynne Detrick Memorial Instrument Fund in honor of Lynne Detrick, one of the founding board members of Music and Arts Partners. Lynne passed in December of 2016, after a courageous 6-month battle with cancer. For more than 22 years she wore many MAP hats, serving as secretary, treasurer, event planner, fundraiser, writer and devoted music advocate. Dedicated to the funding of district instrument repair and replacement, this memorial fund will provide district teachers the opportunity to submit instrument grant requests to MAP and better meet instrument needs of their fast growing middle and high school band and orchestra programs.
MAP has a goal of raising over $100,000 to maintain a sustainable endowment fund to support district instrument needs. As the fund grows, grant opportunities will be extended to elementary school teachers to meet instrument needs.
One-hundred percent of all donations made will be reserved in a separate MAP fund designated only for district instrument repair and replacement costs. MAP is a nonprofit organization that works to fill the gaps in arts and music in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.
Athey Creek, WLWV Practice Inclusiveness With Profound Guest Speaker Andrew J. Young
Athey Creek Middle School received the honor of welcoming former United States Congressman, Ambassador, and lifelong Civil Rights Activist Andrew J. Young as a keynote speaker for a one-of-a-kind event on Nov. 6.
Called Destination: Global Justice, the assembly was something of a culmination for West Linn-Wilsonville students who have spent the past few weeks learning about the Civil Rights movement and what it means for today’s society. Joined by students from other WLWV middle schools and primary schools, Athey Creek listened to student speeches and poems themed around inclusive practices, equality, and global justice before turning the mic over to Young.
Young spoke of his experiences of both the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1960s as well as his time as a politician in Georgia and eventually as US Ambassador. Young also answered questions from students, including those like “What did it feel like to be a person of color now compared to the past?” As well as “What did you do when you were a kid to help the Civil Rights Movement, and what can students do to make a difference in our own communities?”
Athey Creek students then awarded Young with the school’s highest honor — the Athey Creek Middle School Spirit of Unity Award to close out the morning’s celebration. The themes and lessons learned during the Destination: Global Justice unit and assembly is just the start for Athey Creek and WLWV students, however, as they continue to work toward creating an inclusive and welcoming school community for all students and people.
