Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
January 17, 2019
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
It is with a heavy heart that I write this week's principal note. As many of you are aware, high school student Tristan Toppert passed away tragically earlier this week. This has undoubtedly sent ripples through Steamer Nation and affected the lives of so many.
As a football coach and teacher at Fulton High School, I had the privilege to get to know Tristan. I was amazed at his uncanny ability to know so much random trivia knowledge and how he could talk sports and stats all day long. He was always willing to help in any capacity and lend a helping hand. I recall him helping to live stream a handful of events even though he wasn't enrolled in the Media Publications course!
When I taught Consumer Education, the conversations with students would always steer towards being a good person, helping others, becoming a giving person, and having empathy towards all. And there is always a video that I would watch with the students, which helped make that point. I share that video below. It truly impacted my view on life and tugged at my heart.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Tristan's family and friends -- I cannot even begin to fathom how difficult this is. Please know that all of Steamer Nation supports you.
If you could stand in someone else's shoes, hear what they hear, see what they see, feel what they feel, would you treat them differently?
From the desk of: Counselor Mrs. Meumann
Meaningful conversations with children are important. These conversations teach children how to talk respectfully to others and to listen. These are important life skills. I shared some conversation starters last week. Here are some more:
Can you think of one kind act to share tomorrow?
Is there anything you feel sorry about?
Is there anyone you wish you had helped today?
If you could change anything in the world, what would you change?
How could you help someone who is having trouble making friends?
5 Essentials Survey
The overall parent response rate is 15% from River Bend CUSD 2 for the 2020 Illinois Parent Survey. As a reminder, schools need 20% of their parents to respond in order to receive a report.
Here are the parent response rates for schools in River Bend CUSD 2:
Early Step Pre-School: 11% -- OVER HALFWAY THERE!
Fulton High School: 7%
River Bend Middle School: 16%
Fulton Elem School: 20% -- THE MORE RESPONDENTS THE BETTER!
Please take a few moments to complete the 5 Essentials Survey if you have not done so.

Big Top Books!
The Read-a-thon will be going all month. Pledges can be collected when the January Reading Incentive is completed. We would love to see more reading slips from the adults. Big people love stickers and candy too!
Trigger, the mechanical horse, has loved meeting all the kids this past week. Remember all quarters that Trigger collects go to the Playground Fund for PTO.
Any money brought in for the Read-a-thon can be brought to Stacey Dail or the LRC for PTO.
It's a GREAT month to read and we have a lot of activity under the Big Top Books.
Enjoy the winter, Thanks LeAnn
UPCOMING EVENTS
NO SCHOOL - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
