At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
March 2020
Can you believe it is already March?!?! I am not sure where February went. It was certainly a busy month for the students and staff.
These days, students are tested often. Tests help to reveal important things such as:
- How much students are learning.
- How schools are performing.
- How groups of students (in districts, states, etc.) compare to each other.
During March and April, there will be some very important testing: the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) for 3rd graders. These tests assess the areas of English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.
There are some things that can be done to help your child reduce test anxiety and increase success. The Parent Institute and other experts recommend that children should follow these guidelines before any testing situation:
- Don’t stay up late. Aside from studying, the next best preparation is a good night’s sleep before the test.
- Eat healthy meals. Make sure he/she eats a good breakfast. This provides energy at test time.
- Wear a favorite outfit. Your child should pick one that makes him/her feel comfortable. Make sure there are layers so, if it is too hot or too cold, he/she can take off a sweater or sweatshirt.
- Learn to relax. Some children find it helpful to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths before a test. Others like to imagine a peaceful place. It really does calm them down.
- Be positive. Expecting to do well helps children do well. Encourage your child to think positive thoughts!
- Face fears. It’s normal to be worried about tests. But if your child seems too anxious, ask about his/her fears. You may be able to reassure him/her. Let the teacher know, she can help, too.
The teachers have been working hard on preparing the students for the upcoming tests. They have worked on teaching good test taking skills. I hope the preparation at school, as well as these tips, can help set up a successful testing experience.

2020 U.S. Census Information
2020 U.S. Census Information
The U.S. Census event will take place this spring. The census is a count of all people living in the United States and takes place every 10 years. For the first time, one can respond online and will receive a unique identifying number in the mail. The online feature begin this month.
The census is important because it helps decide how much federal money our schools will receive over the next 10 years, and how much money our state will receive for parks, neighborhood improvements, public health, transportation, and many other programs and services.

Mr. Drew Hallman and helpers took time out of their busy schedules to present “From Milk to Ice Cream”. The 2nd graders learned interesting facts about dairy cows. They were excited to make ice cream using steps from a recipe card and shaking their “milk babies” to make ice cream that they were eager to devour. Now, they are working to create a magazine cover to enter into a contest about what they learned from the presentation for the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. Learning can be interesting and yummy. Thanks to Dairy Cows!
Haskin third graders had a visit from Mrs. Barker, the school’s Art in Science teacher who
taught the students about how oil and water do not mix because of density. Students then
created Valentine’s Day cards using oil based paints and water.
Hey, Do You Want to Trade?
Mrs. Dougherty’s class was learning about trading so the students wrote down something they
were willing to trade. Then the students began to barter to see if they could trade their item
for someone else’s item. Some students were successful while others were not able to make a
favorable trade.
Haskin third graders visited the Sandwich Opera House to see the, “Fabulous Fable Factory”
show presented by the American Eagle Production troupe. The company acted out familiar
fables, and students learned the meanings of the stories through the morals presented.
