Trainings & Curriculum Updates
In an effort to keep you fully informed I'm including a link to the Curriculum Courier (admin newsletter). This link will give you access to current and past issues of the newsletter. The Courier will provide you with pertinent information for your grade and content area. Although some weeks are more informative than others you should try to review it regularly.

- Remember to login to Schoology to access the resources from David Noel's Science course.
- Remember to commit to AT LEAST 10 minutes per day to address/work on/focus on academic vocabulary.
Remember that the district expectation is a minimum of 150 minutes of science time per week (90 minutes minimum at kindergarten) and that within that time the TEKS specify the percent of hands-on experiences as follows:
- Kinder and 1st - 80%
- 2nd and 3rd - 60%
- 4th and 5th - 50%
Although many science concepts spiral, conceptual understanding develops over time. The various experiences at each grade level are important contributors to overall conceptual understanding.

Something you should know....
The district will be going to the state approved appraisal system beginning next year affectionately referred to as T-TESS. There will be training as we go into the new year and as I know more so too will you. If you want to check out some information on this system you can find it on the TEA website or by following this link.
As I stated in previous N&N's the district accounting system will be changing. THIS INCLUDES ACTIVITY FUNDS.
Please plan to have orders for the end of this year plus START UP for next year submitted to me by March 4th. As you are estimating how much to spend please keep your expenses in the $200-$300 range (PER INDIVDUAL TEACHER).
If you have Field Trip, Reimbursement, or Wish List requests through activity fund you will need to submit these to Annelise by April 20th. Activity Funds will be controlled by the district after this date (meaning some procedures and timelines will be impacted).
As always APPROVED VENDORS are mandatory. You WILL NOT be reimbursed for purchases that are not Approved Vendors (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep this in mind)
Recently a colleague shared a story with me regarding a staff member and a damaged device. The educator dropped their device causing $400+worth of damage. The educator was/is responsible for the damage to their device and because they did not have it insured this cost is coming out of their pocket. I am sharing this story with you because I never want you all to be in this position. Please be sure to protect our school devices but please also protect the devices that have been provided to you through the generosity of our school district. Protecting these devices includes caring for the screens, keyboard, lightning cords, bricks and all. Please make sure you and your device are protected. If you are wondering...the Worth Avenue Group ( WAG-Apply Online ) is one source that was shared by the middle school for the learner iPads but your personal insurance may provide coverage as well.
Some things to REFLECT on...
During our Curriculum Audit Site Visit the following things (among others) were noted:
- Classroom Management & Structure
- Digital Tools
- Grade Level Alignment
Please reflect on what you were doing when we visited and whether the points above reflect on you as a "strength" or as an area in which to improve upon. I'd love to discuss your thoughts - please feel free to let me know if you'd like to.
During our ESL Site Visit we looked for some of these things:
- Academic Vocabulary
- Learning Objectives
- Visual Cues
- Anchor Charts
- Descriptive Language
- Learners "labeled" as ESL for 4+ years (and why)
If you have ESL learners in your classroom please reflect on the strategies you have put in place to support them. Do you know why your learners are still classified as ESL? What is holding them back from exiting the program? What do you need to do to support them? Are you following the expected SIOP strategies in your room (including the visuals listed above)? Are you using Ana as a resource? Why not?

- You will earn 12 hours of FLEX for this training
AUGUST 11TH WE WILL PLAN A PD DAY
- This can be used to "trade out" for your June (2017) PD day
LISA HAS AGREED TO CREATE A 6 HOUR GT UPDATE (RELATED TO UBD)
- This is slated to take place on August 11th
This should fulfill our 6 hour gt requirement for next year
THE REALLY GREAT NEWS IS:
AT THE END OF THESE 3 DAYS YOU WILL BE IN GREAT PD SHAPE
- BUT YOU WILL STILL NEED TO EARN 6 HOURS OF PD/FLEX ON YOUR OWN

The MetroTex Association of REALTORS will award grants from its Charitable Trust for a tangible project that must be used for the enrichment of all students in that school.
