FAFSA Information:
Beginning October 1, the FAFSA will open for the 2020-2021 school year. All families of seniors planning to go on with ANY kind of education beyond high school is strongly encouraged to complete the FAFSA. This form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, helps students qualify for all forms of financial aid: grants, scholarships, loans and work study.
The form is available online and requires families to use their 2018 (yes, 2018) tax information to complete it.
Monday, Oct. 7, I will have a Financial Aid Officer come to make a quick presentation about the FAFSA process in the auditorium. After the presentation, anyone wanting to either get started on their FAFSA or to complete their FAFSA will come to the Career Center where the Financial Aid Officer and myself will help families with the FAFSA.
If you would like help, please bring your 2018 tax information with you.
I will also be available for extended hours on the following nights (3:30-6:30) in the Career Center to help any families with their FAFSA: (Remember to bring your 2018 tax information!)
October 8, 15, 22 and Nov. 5, 12 and 19.
College Application Week
The week of October 7, all seniors will be invited to complete the Apply Idaho application during their American Gov’t classes. If students do not have an American Gov’t class, I will be calling them out of another class on Friday, the 11th.
Our goal is to make sure all students have the opportunity to go to college and to see how easy it can be to complete an application.
Students are encouraged to memorize their Social Security number as a piece of the Apply Idaho...they DO NOT have to have it but it does help link their college application with the FAFSA. So, if possible, please have them memorize the number!!
Seniors should have received their Direct Admit letter from the State Board of Education the last week in September. This letter explains to them the public colleges in the State of Idaho for which they can apply and be admitted, depending on their cumulative, unweighted GPA and SAT or ACT scores.
PSAT: Wednesday, Oct. 16
All sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16. There is nothing that sophomores or juniors need to complete to be registered. The schedule will be a regular Wednesday schedule. Students will need to be in their testing rooms at 8:20 a.m. ready to begin. Testing will end at by lunch time and students will return to their regular scheduled afternoon classes after lunch.
Students should bring #2 pencils, a small snack, calculator they use in math and a picture ID with them. They are asked to leave backpacks and all electronics, especially cell phones in their lockers. If they are found using any electronics, they will be dismissed from the testing.
All students have been given a presentation about the test and given a practice booklet through their English classes. If a student does not have an English class, they are encouraged to drop by the Career Center for a booklet.
Results will be available in December.
Boise National College Fair: Wednesday, October 30
The annual Boise College Fair will take place at the Expo Idaho. All juniors will be bussed to the event for an hour long opportunity to visit with over 130 college representatives from across the country and internationally.
This event is open to the public and families are encouraged to attend the evening session from 6-8 p.m.
To prepare juniors for this event, I will be having juniors create an account on Scoir (They will be asked to invite parents to make an account!) and I will have them do a college sort to help them think about the criteria that is important to them in looking for a college. They will also receive a list of colleges that will be attending the Fair to help them plan their visit on the 30th.

GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING SICK CHILDREN HOME
Each day many parents are faced with a decision: should they keep their sick child at home or send them off to school? Often the way a child looks and acts can make the decision an obvious one. Please consider these guidelines:
- Colds: Please keep your child at home if he/she has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his/her ability to perform in school. (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). If your child experiences green nasal discharge that continues throughout the day, or a cough lasting longer than ten days, or is accompanied by fever or chills and is productive of discolored sputum, consult with your physician.
- Conjunctivitis (Pink-eye): Following a diagnosis of bacterial conjunctivitis, the child may return to school after the first dose of prescribed medication. Students with viral infection may return when eyes are clear.
- Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and/or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours.
- Fever: A child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees. The child can return to school after he/she has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin).
- Impetigo: A child with impetigo may return to school 24 hours after treatment has begun. A doctor's note of proof of prescription is recommended.
- Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash should return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorized the child's return to school.
- Strep Throat: A child with strep throat may return to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has begun.
A sick child cannot learn effectively and is unable to participate in classes in a meaningful way. Keeping a sick child home prevents the spread of illness in the school community and allows the child an opportunity to rest and recover.
