HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER

A MESSAGE FROM MRS. FORD
Welcome to Dummer! Our school is growing and expanding with new students and families. We were able to add another 4th and 5th grade class to our teams. We now have seven 4th grade classes and six 5th grade classes. The students have made themselves at home and have fit in quite nicely. Thank you for sharing your children with us and please always keep in close contact with your child’s teacher(s) and encourage your child to talk about their day at home. We are all working together to bring the best possible experiences of learning and growing for our children, and by working together in nurturing environments only adds to the successes we will surely see! We would also like to introduce our new staff members this year. Mrs. Brynn Hallman is our new 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Jessica Gale is our new 4th grade teacher, Mr. Derek Jones is one of our 4th grade special education teachers, and Mrs. Heather DeWitt will be teaching P.E. on Thursdays and Fridays.
Parent/Guardian support and volunteers are welcome here at Dummer! One way to show your support is to check out our Parent Group. Another way to be involved is to contact your child’s teacher. We are always looking for parent/guardian and/or community help, so just give us the word. ☺ We are always open for ideas. If you wish to volunteer, you will need to fill out a volunteer packet and turn it in to the school. Our district will do a background check and then you will be notified if/when accepted.
Keep on the look-out for different activities that happen at H.E. Dummer School throughout the year that promote positive choices. We have numerous after school clubs that your children may enjoy. Information about these activities will be coming home with your child throughout the year. It’s important for students to know that school is not all academics. It is so much more!
We look forward to being a part of your family and to a wonderful year!
Hakuna Matata!
Mrs. Ford

A reminder to those who are a part of the Free/Reduced Lunch Plan – these students are eligible for free/reduced breakfast and lunch, and both include milk. If your child is on F/R Lunch they will not be allowed to purchase snacks unless they have a balance on their lunch card or they use cash.
Lunch Card Negative Balances: We will be sending negative balance reports home as needed. You may check your student’s balance on the Tyler Parent Portal.
Attendance Policy: To report an absence, parents or guardians are to call the school (815)786-8498 between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. (An answering machine will take calls before 7:00 a.m.) NOTES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR A STUDENT’S ABSENCE. If a phone call is not received by 10:00 a.m., a reasonable attempt will be made to contact a parent or guardian. If contact cannot be made, the absence will be considered unexcused. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Please be reminded that school is in session from 7:55-2:55. Students who arrive late to school are considered tardy and need to sign in at the office. Three tardies count as one unexcused absence. Please make sure your child arrives before the 8:00 tardy bell. Students arriving to class after the last bell (8:00 a.m.) may be issued a detention after receiving a third tardy to school. Students arriving after 8:10 a.m. may be issued a 45-minute school detention. *All of our attendance rules and regulations can be found in the student handbook.
Absences: Students shall be permitted no more than seven (7) excused absences, including vacations, per school year based upon parental/legal guardian confirmation for the reasons of the absence. After the student has been excused seven times in one school year, additional excused absences for illnesses may only be verified through a written medical statement from a physician.
The district policy follows the state policy. Our policy is subject to change if the state makes any changes.

VOLUNTEERS AND CHAPERONES
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our district has a unified volunteer form that will need to be filled out, and approved, in order for any individual to volunteer in our schools. This also includes chaperones, class parties, parent groups/parent group activities, or anything that involves our school buildings. Once you have been approved, your name goes on a district document that lets all the buildings know you have been approved. This is for parents/guardians who may have multiple children in the district so you do not have to fill out the form for different buildings, only one form per family. You may send this form back with your child to Dummer School. Extra forms may be downloaded from the district webpage at www.sandwich430.org or click on the link below for the form. If you have any questions, you may contact the school at (815)786-8498. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford
