COMMUNITY and CAMPUS PRIDE WORK DAY RECAP
Thank you to everyone who sponsored a Hood River Valley High School student to work for them. The change we made this year from our normal Community Work Day to Community and Campus Pride Work Day was incredible. We had 390 students that turned in contracts and 73 of those students signed up to work at our school cleaning, washing, clearing brush, raking, digging, planting, weeding, picking up garbage and making our school look beautiful. Students that didn’t turn in a contract to work at school all day were still able to lend a helping hand when some staff brought their classes out to help. Our students that worked out in the community did an outstanding job too. We are so proud of all our students and hope next year more will be able to participate. This year we are using funds raised to collaborate with our Booster Club to purchase a name/reader board for our building. If you had a student work for you and have not sent in your payment of $50 please either send a check made payable to: HRVHS/CWD with your student or mail it to: HRVHS, ATTN: CWD, 1220 Indian Creek Rd., Hood River, OR 97031. Thank you again for supporting our program.
A Note from the School Nurse
As it is allergy season - just a reminder that for any medication needed during school hours the front office must have a medication administration form on file. If a student is carrying their own medication, the medication administration form must be signed by parents/guardian and a student’s healthcare provider. If a student is going to have the medication in the front office, the form should just be signed by parent/guardian. All medications that will be kept in the front office must be brought into school by a parent/guardian and must have student’s name on the container. All medications must be picked up by parent at the end of the school year – any medication not picked up will be thrown away.

Host an AFS exchange student
Learn about the world without leaving home!!!
Host an AFS exchange student and create a cultural connection that will last a lifetime!
AFS Intercultural programs is looking for host families here in Hood River for the 2016-2017 school year. There are currently two places available at HRVHS for international students coming to the US for an amazing immersion experience. AFS host families come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common- an eagerness to open their hearts and homes to international students. Hosting a student is an excellent way to get an international experience without leaving home and to share your own family’s customs with someone from another culture. Families can host for a semester or a full school year. Learn more about hosting by visiting www.afsusa.org/host or contact French teacher Nicole Goode (Nicole.goode@hoodriver.k12.or.us) to hear about her experience hosting an AFS student from Mali in West Africa or to get your questions answered. There are dedicated volunteers in the Gorge who support families with exchange students. They provide wonderful support and will help you make the most of your exchange experience.

Summit Career Center
Summer College Visits
Summer is the perfect time for parents of juniors to help their soon-to-be senior concentrate on what career and college plans their student will pursue after high school by visiting different colleges. The SUMMIT Career Center has a handout on suggested questions to ask when you are visiting a college. If you want some direction in which colleges or technical schools to visit, the SUMMIT office would be glad to schedule an appointment with you and your student. Call Lisa at 387-5034. Students can and should also see their Guidance Counselor with questions.
Want to Learn More about HRVHS
One of the best ways to be involved in your student’s high school education is to volunteer at HRVHS. Volunteers are being sought now for next fall to tutor students, chaperone special events, and mentor students through our ASPIRE program which encourages post-secondary education for all students. Applications can be obtained by downloading the forms under SUMMIT on the HRVHS website or contacting Lisa in the SUMMIT Career Center at 387-5034.
