Farewell to our friends who have moved away! Welcome back Cedric!
What are we learning?
In Unit 2, we are learning to write capital letters the fundations way. We are also learning to tap and blend CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words like "cat"). Please practice these important skills at home. The fundation work comes home in their folders.
During read aloud time, the class is retelling a story in the order that the events occurred. We will start talking about the main idea of a story this week. During small group time, we are practicing strategies to become better readers. Point to the words when you are reading to make sure you don't miss or add any. Use the pictures and use the beginning sound(s) to help you figure out words. You can practice all of this at home when you and your child are reading!
We just finished a unit on informational writing and your child's work will be coming home this week. Look for writing about weather, shapes and animals. This week, we will begin a unit on opinion writing. They will begin by writing what animal they think makes the best pet!
In our large group time, we have begun figuring out story problems that involve addition. During our workshop time, students are involved in activities that have them counting, comparing numbers and figuring out what one more or less of a number is. Ask about racing bears...they love it!
Science and Social Studies
We have been reading and learning about winter weather, what we do in winter and how animals live in cold weather. The students earned a special activity last week and we watched a "Magic School Bus" show about the Arctic! I have an exciting experiment planned for the end of the week in which they will get to experience how some animals can live where it is really cold!
