Chavez Eagle Express

Week of Sept. 29, 2014

Definition: To anticipate the possible outcome; a positive attitude.

Mr. Gerald Muhammad---Assistant Principal Spotlight

It was during my early childhood that my mother instilled into me to acquire knowledge to benefit me, requiring that I read a book a week. At a young age, I developed a great respect for educators and the educational system, which is what initially drew my interest to the field. My educational career has allowed me to serve students in many capacities, e.g., teacher, special education coordinator, testing coordinator, principal and assistant principal. I have also been able to participate on various educational committees and have had the honor of making educational presentations to community organizations.

My wife and I keep busy with the activities of two young children. We are also active in Boy Scouts and Habitat for Humanity. My hobbies are reading and enjoying the great outdoors.

My greatest gift is my life, and the greatest thing I can do with my life is give it to help others.

I am excited about being here at Chavez Elementary.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser Ends Monday, September 29

Monday, Sept. 29, is the last day to turn in cookie dough money for our annual fundraiser. I want to express my appreciation to all of our families for all of your hard work and effort to raise funds in support of Chavez Elementary. I am amazed each year how much is raised through our awesome parent community. Please send in your funds with the sales tracking chart including your student's name. It is hard to keep track of sales and prizes if we don't know who made the sales. We want your child to enjoy the prizes of all of your hard work.

Attendance and Tardies

Our attendance rate dropped last year from 97.2 to 96.5. Part of our campus rating is based on our campus attendance and has a financial impact as well for the district. We realize there are circumstances that are unavoidable in all families. Your child's regular attendance makes a big difference in their learning as well as developing life long personal habits. The parent is the single most influential factor in developing those habits. We are beginning the sixth week of school and traffic has leveled off. Please plan your schedule so students arrive on time. The tardy bell rings at 7:40am. We appreciate your efforts to bring your child regularly and on time. Our goal is to raise that attendance back to 97.2 .

* Please use the crosswalk to walk across traffic lanes. Drivers know to watch for crossing traffic at the crosswalks.

* Do not leave cars unattended in any traffic lane. If you must please park in the parking lot.

* Only drop off and pick up students on the inside lane. It is dangerous for students to cross traffic lanes from the outside lane.

* Please do not exceed 5 miles per hour in the traffic lanes. Some of our students are so small that you cannot see them in front of or behind your car.

* Be calm and anticipate traffic delays when you are in a hurry. The safety of all our students depends on all of us doing our part.

Once again, thank you so much for your patience and making safety a priority.
