Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Lin-Manuel Miranda
The spotlight for this week is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Lin-Manuel Miranda developed a devotion to musical theater and hip-hop before attending Wesleyan University. He wrote and starred in the Tony-winning 2008 musical In the Heights before working on additional Broadway productions and making screen appearances. Inspired by reading Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton, Miranda eventually developed the musical Hamilton, a groundbreaking work that tells the story of the U.S. Founding Father with hip-hop/R&B musical forms and a Black and Latino cast. With Miranda in the titular role, the production was a phenomenal success commercially and critically, winning the Pulitzer Prize and 11 Tony Awards in 2016. Miranda also scored a Grammy Award and an Oscar nomination for composing the song "How Far I'll Go" from the 2016 animated film Moana and starred in 2018's Mary Poppins Returns.
Free School Breakfast
Per a recent announcement by Governor Tom Wolf, school breakfast will be free for all students effective October 1, 2022. During the month of September, students who are not receiving meal benefits will continue to be charged for breakfast. However, all students will be eligible for free breakfast on October 1, 2022 as per the new guidance.
Parent Speaker Series
HAVE YOU HAD THE CONVERSATION? How to talk to young children about substances
is geared to the elementary parent.
Elementary school years are the ideal time for families to begin important conversations about substance use, with special sensitivity toward young children.
Together we will have an engaging conversation about:
• The reality of when and how kids are introduced to substances.
• How to have a conversation about those who struggle with substance use.
• Understanding risk factors and protective factors, and empowering ourselves as parents.

You’ll receive weekly communications from me to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community!

Reflect on a goal you’ve worked toward and what you learned.
