Lansing Intermediate Roar
6th (Super Bowl) Edition, 2-1-2023
Principal's Message - Mr. Altieri
It has been a busy third quarter at LIS! Students are working hard in math, reading novels, learning about synonyms, and much more. Our winter testing data looked very encouraging and we have used it to get a jump start on providing students with the extra academic support they need.
Fifth grade went on a field trip to the KU Natural History Museum and learned about the states of matter and how transitions differ based on the element being affected. Afterwards, classes toured the exhibits and saw both past and present species that reside in Kansas.
Our Building Leadership Team met before break and worked together to revamp policies and procedures based on our data and observations from the first semester. We are continuously working to refine and improve the experience for our students and staff.
There are more great things coming in February. Fourth grade is visiting Topeka to tour the Kansas State Capitol building. We are having a Chiefs Spirit Week and hopefully by the time of our next newsletter, we are celebrating another Chiefs Super Bowl victory!

Prepare for the cold weather and make sure the kids have a coat. If they don't have a coat and it's below 32 degrees they will not be allowed outside.
Please keep in mind that our building opens at 8am (9am on late start days). There is no supervision for students who are dropped off prior to the building opening.
Please check fees in Skyward. If you have any questions or issues, contact Jennifer Grant (jennifer.grant@usd469.net).

Hello families!
Hope you all had a wonderful break! I'm excited to be back and see all the students!
Kindness Club has elected their officers for the second semester. Congratulations to Ali Swanson-Kolb, President, Callen Thomas, Vice-President, and Leah Nickelson, Secretary. We have picked out kindness club shirts that will be available for all to order (see your email for details) and selling Kindness Grams for Valentine's Day.
Small groups during Pride Time for second semester will start soon. You will get an email from me on Skyward if your child has been selected to participate. During counseling, we will begin our lessons on personal safety. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you all for your support, have a great week!

Fourth Grade - Laurie Holden
We enjoyed a nice winter break and came back ready to hit the ground running. It was so nice to have Fastbridge testing completed and groups made so that it felt like we did not have down time with our MTSS groups.
Field Trip - Regions of The United States are at the center of our social studies curriculum. We will be headed to tour our capitol Feb. 1st.
Caroline Reynolds, our amazing instructional coach, has come into every 4th grade room and taught both teachers and students all the essentials for taking KITE tests which is our state testing provider. The state gives access to practice tests which we plan to utilize weekly so that by the time the real testing comes around in April they are very familiar with the testing program.
Our state testing for Social Studies is a project based cumulative project that is over the regions of The United States. This is the second year for this testing which is a project that we created.
Math - We are working on all things fractions in math. We started with fractional comparisons and equivalent fractions and have moved on to addition and subtraction of fractions with common denominators. We are seeing a great start to these standards because of the background fluency the kids have with the addition of Frax which is a fraction fluency program we added this year that mirrors Reflex.
ELA - We are in Unit 4 in our Wonders resource in which the big idea is How can a Challenge Bring Out Your Best? Comprehension strategies include Cause and Effect and Point of View of characters within the same stories.
Science - We started the semester with our energy unit which coincided with the STEM teachers unit. Our end of unit activity was a STEM activity where students had to create a roller coaster with two hills and a loop that had enough potential energy for a marble to make it to the end of the track. It was fun to hear the transfer of knowledge between the two classrooms.
Social Studies - We have been working on a government unit (cross curricular since Wonders had stories related) and will end the unit with our field trip to tour the capitol.
SEL & BIST- Second Step lessons have moved to problem solving lessons and strategies.
Fifth Grade - Sara Martin
5th grade went on a field trip to the KU Natural History Museum. The students toured the museum and attended a class on Matter. It was a successful trip and the students seemed to enjoy all it had to offer.
Reading – Several classes are finishing up with Argumentative Text. A story about Machu Picchu gave points and counterpoints about the actual use of the city. Students summarized the two points and also identified the author’s purpose for the story. Students will next be reading Biographies. They will continue to work on Author’s purpose and summarizing.
One class is working on a novel study. They will read A Long Walk to Water and complete tasks on comprehension, summarizing, and vocabulary.
Math – Students have finished chapter 6 – Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators. Classes are working on Chapter 7 – Multiplying Fractions or 8 – Dividing Fractions. Students use various models to multiply and divide.
Science – Some classes have been studying the Water Planet through Mystery Science. Students had the opportunity to create tiny oceans. These tiny oceans were then evaporated to see the salt from the ocean. Students also worked through a simulation in groups to identify the best place to build a town with a well.
Physical Education - Christine Robinson
We are having a blast roller skating in the gym this month! Our 4th & 5th grade students have done the Chicken dance, the Chacha slide, the Hokey pokey, the YMCA, and the Macarena all on skates! We will end our unit with the Limbo contest, Glow skate, and roller skating in the hallways!
Library Log
December was a busy month in the library. 4th graders are creating a winter story which they will finish and share with their peers. The students also did Christmas/Winter hangman games. January we will also be working on more poetry and library skills.
5th graders worked on a project along with Mrs. Kelly’s kindergarteners. We did a Flat Stanley travels to another school library project. Fifth grade created a Flat Stanley along with a story and Kindergarten is coloring a Flat Stanley and we swapped them before Christmas break. The students had a great time being creative and sharing. Mrs. Kelly and I were very excited to share a project between libraries.
In January, we worked on library skills so students know where and how to find books.

Morning Student Drop-off Procedures
LIS Parents, We want to ensure our students arrive at school safely. Please help us by reviewing our car drop off procedures.
Do not back up traffic by turning left from Ida. Cars have been swerving around backed up traffic and it is dangerous for everyone involved.
If you plan to sit in the car with your child, and not immediately drop off, pull forward to the end of the cones to prevent traffic backing up to Ida.
Circle around the parking lot back to Ida after dropping off.
Be patient. Saving thirty seconds of time is not worth endangering our students.
Reach out to school staff if there are issues you see that need to be addressed. We are always looking to make drop off more efficient and streamlined.
