Notes from the Administration

Just a reminder that our Weekly News, will be sent out on Thursday evenings of each week- starting today. The newsletter will no longer be distributed via email- but through Find Out First. Thank you to everyone who has returned their yellow Emergency Cards. Find Out First will send communications to the email address that was listed on your Emergency Card.

This newsletter serves as an important communication between home and school. Please be sure to reach out to the front office, if you aren't receiving our Find Out First communications.

Please take the time to read our newsletter each week to get updated information about news and special events happening here at Whittier ES!

Field Trip or Class Party Chaperones

We would like to remind you of FCPS Regulation 400-5, which outlines field trip guidelines and protocols for our school and our families.

For field trips, if you haven't been selected as a chaperone, please respect the teachers decisions for chaperone guidelines.

As stated in the regulation:

  • The field trip shall be planned to provide for the safety, comfort, and protection of students, teachers, and chaperones.
  • Students and chaperones shall conduct themselves according to standards of behavior that will secure maximum educational benefits, maintain good public relations, and contribute to individual and group safety.

Thank you for recognizing that our teachers jobs are difficult and ensuring student safety is a priority, we appreciate that parents do not arrive at field trip sites or bring siblings to a field trip.

Thank you in advance for recognizing that siblings are not permitted when volunteering or chaperoning class parties.

WFMS Spagehetti Dinner Tonight from 5-7

West Frederick Middle School PTA is hosting a spaghetti dinner tonight Friday September 28th at Frederick High School from 5-7 before the first home football game.

The sauce is home made being prepared by the kitchen class at FHS. We would love your support!

Missing school = Missing out

Research tells us that attendance in school is closely linked with academic success. While students can make up some work that is missed, it is impossible to recreate experiential learning and academic conversations between teachers and students. Please keep the following in mind regarding student attendance:

* Students need to arrive prior to 8:55

* Dismissal starts at 3:30

  • We will closely monitoring the number of late arrivals and early dismissals for students. We will be sharing that information with our Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) who assists us in enforcing mandatory attendance standards.
  • If your child is having a difficult time getting to school on time, please reach out to Mrs. Reese or Mr. Francis for support.

Parent Volunteers/Visitors to the Building

This year, FCPS has introduced a new systematic visitor management system called Raptor. Raptor compares visitors to our school against national data bases from all 50 states to ensure the safety of our students. Visitors to our school may be asked to show identification before entering the building. Parents wishing to volunteer for school events, chaperone a party, or chaperone a field trip will still need to complete our Volunteer Training. We will offer volunteer training once a month. Our next training will be on Monday, October 15 at 6:00pm.

Thanks to all of our WATCH DOG participants

Watch Dogs is a national program that promotes strong male role models in public schools. We are entering our third year of the Watch Dog program at Whittier ES and are looking for volunteers to come to school on the day of your choice to work with our students and staff. All dads, grandfathers, uncles, step dads are encouraged to join our team of WATCH DOGS! If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to Mr. Byrd and he will get you set up with a day to volunteer.

Students brought home their TECH TREK packet last week. We appreciate your support with this event. Since our 1st event- 5 years ago we have been able to ensure that every classroom has smart boards, Ipads, laptops, and Chromebooks.

Our students in Grades 3 and 4 are starting the year with each student having access to a device for learning. Our goal for this year- to purchase Chromebooks for our students to be 1:1 in 5th Grade.

Labels were due today. We will still accept labels on Monday October 1st!

If you are able to assist with envelope stuffing, we could use your help. - Tuesday October 2nd @ 4pm. Can't get to WHES till later- don't worry- it goes on for quite a while. But many hands make light work!

Find Out First

In order for you to receive Find Out First notices, our school must enter the parent/guardian email address in eSchool.

  • To get FindOutFirst (FOF) email such as emergency-closing notices and school newsletters, parents MUST provide a current email address to the school and notify the school if it changes.
  • This means clearly printing any change on the Student Information Card parents complete at the beginning of the school year.
  • For new parents, it means providing a current email address during enrollment.
  • The new procedure for parent news uses the email address uploaded nightly from the FCPS Student Information System to FOF. Notifying the school is the ONLY way to update a parent's primary email address for FindOutFirst news.

Thank you for working with us so that we can communicate best with you!

Please take a moment and become a member of the PTA. Your membership entitles you to discounts in and around Frederick County. More importantly, your membership says that you are in support of our school. We would love to have you join us. ALL ARE WELCOME!
