SHS Weekly Newsletter #24

2/24/22

Message from Mr. Mitchell

Wow, it's been a wild last couple of days! We hope that all of our students, staff, and families have navigated this weather safely. At this time, we have no information about any potential calendar adjustments due to the missed days. If there are any changes, the district and the school will send out that update as soon as possible.

With the weather challenges, our varsity basketball teams will play their final regular season games at SHS on Saturday at 1pm (boys) and 3pm (girls). These will be our "Senior Night" games where we get the chance to honor our current seniors before the games. Additionally, our Bowmen Pageant will be held as scheduled this Saturday night at 6:00pm.

Have a great weekend, and Go Bowmen!

Mr. Mitchell

Erin's Law Lesson 2

Our second Erin's Law lesson of the year will be taking place next week on Monday and Friday (2/27 and 3/3) in Homeroom. For more information on these sexual abuse prevention lessons, you can read our Erin's Law Letter to Families. If you opted your child out of these lessons, they can go straight to the community room (C201) for Homeroom on Monday and Friday. If you haven't opted your student out, but want to, you can find the opt-out link in the above letter. Please opt out by Monday morning at 8 am so we have time to notify their homeroom teacher. Due to the furlough day in March, we had to adjust the Erin's Law Lesson 3 and 4 dates. Here are the dates for the remaining lessons for the year:

Lesson 2: 2/27/2023 and 3/3/2023

Lesson 3: 3/14/2023 and 3/16/2023

Lockdown Drills at All Schools (February 27-March 10)

All schools in our district will be participating in lockdown drills February 27-March 10. These drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific protocols that would occur in an emergency situation. This will be the second lockdown drill of the year and will not be announced to students or staff in advance to allow for an accurate observation of any response protocols that need improvement or additional training. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near campus during a lockdown drill, as SPD officers do participate in these drills.

During a lockdown drill, staff and students are secured within their individual classrooms/offices, and there is no movement in the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.

For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.

Girls State Opportunity for Current Juniors

Our local AFW Women's Auxiliary has offered to sponsor the participation fees for two SHS juniors for Girls State in Washington State this summer. Oregon has decided not to participate so there won't be an opportunity for our students to participate closer to home.

Female high school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units for this program, where they learn about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. The girls are assigned to mock cities and either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party.” Candidates should be keenly interested in government and current events, and show strong leadership abilities.

Girls State will be held at Central Washington University, June 11th-17th 2023. Applicants will be responsible for their own travel to and from the event.

If your student is interested in applying for this program, please have them talk to their school counselor before May 1st.
