Education in the 1930's

During the Great Depression

Kids in School in 1930's

- Girls wore dresses, boys wore overalls most of the time

-Parents had to buy all school books

-Most children walked to school

-Some children had to drop out of school and get a job to help support the family

Teachers in the 1930s

-A young teacher taught all grades at the same time in a one-room grade school.

-Many districts couldn't pay their teachers because property taxes had increased at that time.

-Teachers took care of everything at the schools; the cleaning, heating, and even maintenance in addition to teaching.

School activities

-Young boys played marbles, cowboys and Indians, and cops and robbers while using handmade guns and toys.
-Girls played with Shirley Temple dolls starting in the mid-1930s and read Nancy Drew mysteries.
