Magic of Writing: Ray Bradbury's Techniques
Sam Weller--Bradbury Biographer
Bradbury was full of Wonder and Gratitude--marvelled at the sunrise/sunset every day
You need a community of writers-- (like Los Angeles Science Fiction League, Inklings)
In writing, from quantity, comes quality
Write from a place of emotional truth. Your truth. Write what you know--so much more--write what emotions you know: losses, grief, jubilation--Authenticity
Technology isn’t as interesting as the potential of technology in the hands of humans
Stay immersed in art. Read, listen to music, watch movies/theater, co to museums.
Develop a routine. The only time you fail is when you don’t write. Do it every day.
Write about your interests, passions. Write about things you think are cool. Write what you love. Write down ten things you love. Ray Bradbury loved dinosaurs and circuses and lighthouses. From those we get “The Sound of Thunder” and “The Fog Horn.” http://www.grammarpunk.com/lit/gp/THE_FOG_HORN.pdf
Think beyond the cliches and tropes. Invert formula.
Write for you. Do what you love, love what you do.
Ignore discouragement.
Let first drafts be written by your subconscious. Write them quickly. Creativity comes through us.
Generate lots of ideas until one comes along that won’t leave you alone. “Throw up in the morning and clean it up in the afternoon.”
