Mental Health Awareness Month

As we move toward the end of the school year, it is clear that the natural uptick in student stress and anxiety has begun—Senior Project, AP exams, Division One Roundtables, Treatises, finals……the list goes on.

Anxiety is normal, and in many instances can be quite healthy. Anxiety is the feeling that makes someone study for a test, or gives you that feeling in your stomach when you are going up a rollercoaster. Anxiety also makes people plan ahead so they are on time for events, or prepared for a public presentation. It’s the natural push we intrinsically need. Anxiety can, however, move past what is normal, and begin negatively impacting a person's life. When this happens it is important to recognize it and seek assistance.

Here are a few things anyone can do to help keep anxiety at bay: focus on what you can control; get some good sleep, exercise (a short walk can do wonders); practice gratitude by jotting down 3 things you are grateful for every night, be mindful and present, and lastly, talk to someone.

Senior Projects

Congratulations to our seniors who presented their Senior Projects this week. Senior Project, a cornerstone of the Souhegan experience, is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills as self-directed learners by identifying an area of passion, completing significant research in their identified area, applying their research to an original project, and preparing a formal twenty-minute presentation that they share with the greater Souhegan community. Our students shined this week and their presentations on topics ranging from film to carpentry and everything in between, engaged staff, students, and community members alike.

Senior Book Returns

As seniors near the end of classes, they should return library materials and instructional texts as soon as they finish with them. Returning texts incrementally will help prevent bottlenecks for text return and hopefully make their lives easier as they approach graduation. We encourage all seniors to stop by the Info Center and make sure they know exactly what is on their account. Seniors must have all library and instructional materials returned (or paid for) to be eligible to receive their cap and gowns prior to graduation.

Important Senior Announcements

Campus is closed for any senior who has not passed their Senior Project as of 5/20 and/or those who have not met the Community Service graduation requirement (20 hours logged).

Make sure to check Google classroom for community service opportunities. Maren has received a number of requests from community organizations that she is posting. Seniors, please log your hours asap. Seniors must meet the graduation requirement of 20 hours by May 27th. Please see Jon Barry if you need assistance.

As we are approaching graduation, please remember that students who are engaged in VLACS courses must complete them by May 25th. Transcripts from VLACS must be received by June 8th. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to see Maren Petropulos in student services.

Juniors participated in the NH SAS administration on May 16th. Students who were absent on that day will be scheduled to take the make-up on Wednesday, May 25th at 8:30am in the Learning Commons.

Sophomore Parents

Division I Roundtables are happening during Finals Week (June 6th - 10th) between 8:30 am - 2:30 pm.

Division I Exhibition is a significant benchmark in the growth and development of your child as a student. Parents play an integral role in the Division I Roundtable Protocol, and we ask that you take part in the process.

Your child’s Advisor will be scheduling a one hour block of time for this exhibition to celebrate your student’s achievements over the last two years. Please contact your child’s Advisor with any questions.

Congratulations Sue Downer

Chemistry Teacher, Sue Downer, Travels to Washington D.C. to Receive National Science Teaching Award

Next week, Souhegan’s own Sue Downer is traveling to Washington D.C. to be recognized as the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Established in 1983 by Congress, the PAEMST awards are the highest honors that can be awarded by the United States government specifically for teaching science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science k-12. Sue won this prestigious award in 2019 but the celebratory trip to D.C. was postponed due to the pandemic. Sue is looking forward to a series of recognition events, professional development opportunities with other award recipients and possibly a trip to the White House. This is an incredibly well deserved award as we are inspired by Sue’s passion for teaching and her focus on having her students “do” science everyday in her chemistry classes. We are so excited to see her commitment to teaching and learning be recognized nationally. Congratulations Sue!

Field Day Fundraiser

Come help us put on a Field Day Fundraiser this August!

Sabers, we have a great community service opportunity for you this summer.

Move Up Global is a non-profit working to improve access to health care and education in rural Rwanda. They currently work on programs at a Primary School with over 1000 students. So far, they brought the school electricity, computers, internet, clean drinking water and a soap making program. But one thing the students do not have is any sports equipment.

We are putting together a Field Day on August 12 at Souhegan to raise money for Rwandan Sports Equipment.

We would love to have the Saber athletes lead this effort. Tasha Tower (you may know her from AMS) is the liaison and she needs some reps from each team to organize events. We were hoping each sports team would run one event at the field day. If you are interested in giving a little time to this over the summer, please contact Tasha at by May 31.

Souhegan Gridiron Boosters Golf Tournament
