September 18, 2017
Dear Parents,
We have had a great start to the new school year. Below you will find out what your child will be working on in the week ahead. Remember to check Power School for up to date grades.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: Students will review Greek and Latin roots from Root Study 1. A quiz will follow on Wednesday. Students will also start their spelling, vocabulary, and grammar studies.
7th Grade: Students took their first quiz on Greek and Latin roots last Wednesday. Those wishing to bump their score can make corrections and schedule with me a time to retake the quiz. This week, students will start their spelling, vocabulary, and grammar studies. We will first review information from 6th grade before expanding into new territories!
8th Grade: We have started the year working on routines and starting the weekly grammar and spelling programs. Last week the students took the NWEA test for Reading and on Tuesday they will take the Language section of the NWEA. We are also starting an essay called “My Personal Michigan Hero” and the essays will be entered in a competition sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: World Geography: We are practicing how to use latitude and longitude to locate places around the world. We are also going to be working more with the 5 Themes of Geography: Location, Place, Region, Movement, and Human-Environment Interaction.
7th Grade: World Geography: We have been working with the 5 Themes of Geography and accurately describing a place using location, place, region, movement, and human-environment interaction. Student have been creating posters and this week we’ll be taking a gallery walk to “visit” all the places they’ve been researching.
8th Grade: We are starting with a review of the American Revolution with a focus more on the reasons rather than the battles. The students took a quiz on Friday and are starting projects for the unit.
MATH
6th Grade: 6th graders have been learning about integers and how they can be represented in the real world by temperatures, elevations, and gains and losses of money. Expect a quiz towards the end of the week.
7th Grade: We have been learning how to add and subtract both positive and negative integers. Expect a quiz this week.
8th Grade: In 8th grade math we have been turning decimals into fractions and vise versa, without a calculator. This has been a struggle for some to remember their long division rules, but they are getting better every day! Next we will be learning about square and cube roots. Expect a quiz at the end of the week.
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We are working on developing our science process skills. This week we’ll be continuing to practice how to make accurate scientific observations.
7th Grade: We are studying scientific investigations and we tested three different toilet paper brands for toughness!
8th Grade: We are discussing weather patterns and variations in climate. We will be discussing how clouds form and how they are classified this week.
SINCERELY,
