Note from the Principal

Hello Cozier Families! It’s so great to begin the 2020-2021 school year together, even if this year is much different than previous years! We’ve made it through our first two weeks of online learning, and I’ve had an opportunity to join your child’s classroom multiple times. I am beyond impressed with the level of attention, participation and engagement from children. They are raising their hand, sharing their thinking, learning new tech and engaging in academic tasks. Teachers are working hard to connect and communicate clearly in this new environment. While I know there is still a lot of work to be done, I am so grateful to each of you, for supporting your child’s home learning and creating a space for them to be connected and ready to learn.

Thank you for partnering with us in this new way. We are all in this together, and together, we’ll emerge stronger and more able to meet the unique needs of every family. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with questions or feedback. My cell phone number is: 360.988.3600. You are welcome to call or text me any time.

Regards, Ari

School Communication

We are working hard to keep you informed, yet not overwhelm you with emails, calls and messages. In addition to your classroom communication, you can expect the following school-based communication from me:

  • School Newsletters – I will send out two newsletters per month with school-wide updates and information. You can expect these around the first and third weekend of each month.
  • Facebook – if you have not already, like us at @carlcozierelementary (this is different than the PTA Facebook page). You’ll find a quick updates, links and community resources on our FB page.
  • School Website – Please periodically check our school website (https://carlcozier.bellinghamschools.org/) for updates and information. We also post our Friday Assembly videos, past newsletters, and Cozier Conversation slides to the Family section of the website. It’s a great place to catch up on school-related happenings.
  • Direct Contact – You are welcome to email/text/call me with a quick question or need. Email is: Arionda.Feeney@bellinghamschools.org and my district cell phone is: 360.988.3600.

Attendance Reminders

A reminder that daily attendance is being taken by classroom teachers. Our office team is reviewing absences each day and reaching out to families to ensure that every child has the tools needed to engage in online learning. Being marked “present” means that your child has participated in live learning, watched a video post on Seesaw or engaged in an activity on Seesaw.

We know that absences happen, just like they do when we are learning in our building. When your child is absent due to illness, appointment or a family event, please call the office at 360.676.6410 (press option 1 for attendance) so that we can excuse the absence. Thank you for your help with this – and please reach out if questions.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning

Many of you have asked for clarification around synchronous and asynchronous learning. As you meet with your child’s teacher in the next week or two, it will be helpful to begin developing a schedule for your child’s day – and the schedule will include some live learning (synchronous) and some independent tasks (asynchronous).

During those independent times, your child might be asked to complete daily assignments, watch videos, practice a specific skill or work on a project. Your child might also chose to watch a specialist video (PE, Music, Spanish, Library) and complete an activity related to that video. Play is also an important component of independent time, so I encourage you to build a schedule that includes play for your child. It’s important to remember that your teacher will provide you with learning engagements for the non-live learning times and your family can determine how to structure those learning blocks. Please connect with your classroom teacher for more specifics.

Watch Your Email - New Forms!

Every year, we ask families to update student information forms. This year, we’ll be doing that electronically! Later this week, watch for an email from our school with directions on how to log into Skyward to update your child’s information. Thank you for taking the time to do this important work – it’s essential that we have current information for each family and child.

Food Distribution

Food Distribution

It’s so great to see many of you during food distribution on Wednesdays! A reminder that we will be serving meals every Wednesday, 4:00-5:30pm at multiple locations, including Carl Cozier and at Regency Park. Each child, ages 0-18 is encouraged to get a FREE 14-day meal box, which includes, fresh fruits and veggies, scratch made main course, bread, milk and non-perishable items. Hope to see you there! 😊

The IB at Carl Cozier

Hi Cozier Families! My name is Monica Savory and I am Cozier’s IB Coordinator. If you have questions please feel free to contact me: Monica.Savory@bellinghamschools.org. At the elementary level, IB offers the Primary Years Program (PYP). Designed for students age 3 – 12, the PYP provides the knowledge, concepts, skills, personal attributes and the capacity to take action, all of which our students need to feel equipped to lead successful, fulfilling lives, both now and in the future. Carl Cozier become an authorized IB World School during December 2016. Using inquiry as the primary vehicle for learning and teaching, a student’s investigations across and beyond subject areas will strengthen knowledge and understanding as they explore global and relevant questions and transdisciplinary themes.
