MCPS Information
Recent Update from the MCPS School System Medical Officer
During this active cold and flu season, here are some health updates and tips as we start the new year. Although we are in a better place compared to last year’s season, with more tools to prevent severe illness, being aware of current health trends helps keep students and staff ready for teaching and learning.
Read the recent message from the system medical officer to learn more about the following updates:
1. Rates of COVID-19 and influenza (flu) continue to rise, contributing to increased hospital admissions for severe respiratory illness.
2. The Maryland Department of Health issued new masking guidance for health care settings related to increasing hospital admissions from respiratory infections.
3. Prevention, treatment and resources.
Art, Writing, Video Contests Open to Students
Earthday.org’s Your Art, Our Earth poster competition for Earth Day 2024 is open to students from 5-17 years old, and 18 and older until Monday, Jan. 22. The 2024 theme is Planet vs. Plastics, which aims to spotlight the detrimental effects of plastics in our oceans and on land.
The MCPS Division of Sustainability and Compliance (DSC) is sponsoring an art contest to find designs to use as wraps for new electric-powered cargo vans. These electric vehicles will help reduce MCPS’ overall greenhouse gas emissions and support the Board of Education’s commitment to cut GHG emissions by 80% by 2027. All MCPS staff and students from MCPS middle and high schools are invited to participate. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 2. Click to learn more. Visit the MCPS newsroom for more contests.
Attendance Is Important!
Regular daily attendance is expected and critical to a child's academic success. Parent/caregiver support of regular daily attendance is essential. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to notify the school on the day their student is absent. A note stating the reason for absence or lateness is required upon a student's return, or the absence is considered unexcused. Students who were absent from school have the responsibility to request make-up work from their teacher.
