Letter from the Principal
To Our Teeland Families:
A big thank you goes out to our families that supported our school during the mandated statewide PEAKS (Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools) testing requirement. The more students we have participate, the better our data is for planning as a school to serve our students. The testing information is also used to determine class placement and referrals for additional support. State testing is important. If students opt out it contributes to inaccurate information about our school and provides less information about individual students for class placement. This has an overall negative effect on our ability to provide the best education possible for every student.
We will have MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing in April. Again, this information is used to better understand our school performance. The more students that participate, the more information we have for decision making. Some master schedule decisions are made based on the results, as well as class placement for your individual students. MAP testing is equally as important as PEAKS. Thank you in advance for supporting us by having your student at school and doing their best on those days.
The next part of this letter is a repeat from last month due to continuing concerns about student progress. Please take advantage of the below opportunities if your student is struggling to keep up.
1. After school Study Hall, 2:30-3:30, every Tuesday and Thursday. The office has permission slips.
2. Friday school for students that have an IEP or 504 Plan. Contact your student’s case manager for more information.
3. Access to Moby Math or ALEKS, computer-based math programs for extra math support, not linked to grades, but available to all students. Seek out more information from your student’s math teacher if needed.
4. Sora, an online library, available to all Mat-Su students to check out e-books.
5. Contact your student’s counselor to develop a plan for success if your student is struggling.
The schedule for next year is subject to change, but at this time, we are planning on returning to our previous 7 period day. The last period of the day will be dedicated to a focus on Social Emotional Learning, Safety, Writing Enrichment, Effective Study Skill Strategies, and Relationship Building. This is similar to our previous Advisory class, but with an additional emphasis on writing. District Office is working with schools to create a clearer definition of what this will look like in all secondary schools.
Your students continue to impress and bring joy to our school! Every day, staff are grateful we can be in school with our students. Staff will continue to hold high expectations for students until the very last day of school to take full advantage of every hour they are present.
Take care.
Mrs. Hinds, TMS Principal
