Nursing in an Electronic World

Computers Help the Patient

Nursing Informatics

"Nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.” (Ball 2005.)

How does this apply to you new nurses?

As a new nurse you will probably have never used paper documentation. You will already understand that it occurs on the computer. But how does that occur? How is it that we have the correct documentation. Because we have nurses that are in the nurse informatics field. They make sure that the end user (you) has the correct tools in their arsenal of electronic charting to do a good job. According to Aathi (2014) "The transformation of data to knowledge is a key concept of the nursing informatics role and has the potential to significantly impact nursing practice. It involves three components."

"1. Data are discrete entities that are described objectively without interpretation

2. Information is data that are interpreted, organized, or structured

3. Knowledge is information that is synthesized so that relationships are identified and formalized."

Why do you need technology?

  • "Documentation of Client Status and medical records Nursing informatics can make the impossible organization of huge records possible. Research about past medical illness and management are easier since a computer keep the records and the researcher will just get proper access to that information." (Chambers, 2002).
  • Although there's less face time between physicians and nurses, when EHRs are implemented nurses report being more knowledgeable about their patients because of the ready access to patient data from all disciplines. (Fields, 2011)
  • Research results have also demonstrated improved communication across disciplines and care settings after implementation of EHRs (Zadvinskis, 2014)

How We Help You

You may need resources to become better at the electronic record.

  1. 1. IT classes upon hire will help you to become familiar with the system prior to documenting on a real live patient.
  2. On every computer there will be a listed number to get in touch with IT if anything is occurring on your computer whether you forget your password or something freezes. IT is around 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for staff.
  3. Your preceptor will ground you in all areas of documentation. They have been trained to use the electronic chart as an expert and will initially be checking all your documentation as well as teaching you where to document. Use this resource as much as possible to become comfortable.
  4. After orientation, you can lean upon other expert RN's as well as the charge nurse to help you get through documentation.
