TUMUAKI KŌRERO
Kia ora e te whānau,
Term 2 is now in full swing and it is great to see a large number of extra-curricular activities underway. We intend to regularly share and celebrate all the extra activities we participate in at TNIS, look for links in the newsletter and regular updates on the School App.
Community engagement: Thank you to those parents who attended the wine and cheese evening last Tuesday, it was great to engage in dialogue with you. I look forward to meeting more parents via zoom this Thursday evening to share my vision for TNIS and answer your questions. Next week we will be sending a short survey out to families and this information will help us plan for the future direction of the school, please take the time to fill this survey in.
We intend to provide more opportunities for parents to be involved in the school and share aspirations for their children, please look out for further information. This week we have our Māori parent hui and we have our Pasifika Fono scheduled later in the term.
Uniform: Pride and appearance go hand in hand with standards, building self-esteem and confidence. The colder weather has arrived so here are some reminders about our uniform.
wear their uniform correctly and with pride. Please go through the uniform reminders with your child. These can be found further down in the newsletter.
Teacher Only Day: A reminder that school will be closed for instruction on Friday 3 June for our combined schools' Teacher Only Day. Our teachers will be attending workshops and seminars around Wellbeing and Collaboration. Guest speakers include Nathan Wallis and Paula George and workshops will focus on Wellbeing Programmes and Practices and Collaboration.
We thank you in advance for your understanding that school will be closed on this day.
Poipoia te kakano kia puawai- Nurture the seed and it will bloom. (We all need love and care to fully realise our potential)

AKO / LEARNING
Primary Years Programme
This term we have been continuing with our Who We Are Unit of Inquiry. We have been busy learning about the main functions of the human body including learning how different systems work and how these systems impact our wellbeing. Within this, we have been learning about our body and the changes it goes through during puberty. Lots of engaging discussions and insightful questions have come up and hopefully, we all have a better understanding of the changes we will/are going to go through over the coming years.

Last Friday, Mānuka, Rimu and Tōtara teams were lucky enough to have a Zoom meeting with Bella Powell, an 18-year-old who lives with Cystic Fibrosis. She spoke to us about what Cystic Fibrosis is (PYP Key Concept - form), how it affects the body and her day to day life (PYP Key Concepts - function and connection) as well as the work she has been doing with getting a ‘miracle drug’ called Trikafta funded through Pharmac (PYP Key Concept - responsibility). Learners were able to ask her questions; these questions showed a high level of curiosity and helped us learn even more about what it must be like to live with Cystic Fibrosis. She gave us the challenge of trying to walk, run and do our daily activities by breathing through a straw as this is what it is like for her constantly! If you haven’t already, give it a go this week and share how it felt with your whānau.
Over the next week, learners will begin their summative task for Who We Are, which is a chance for them to demonstrate their learning and understanding of the Central Idea and Key Concepts covered in this Unit of Inquiry. At the end of the last term, a group of learners met to discuss some possible summative task ideas and teams have used these to help guide their planning. There were lots of ideas around Advocacy and Lifestyle Choices. We look forward to seeing the outcome!
Our next Unit of Inquiry will begin in Week 4 and is based on Where We Are In Place and Time. The Central Idea is,:” Evidence of past civilizations can be used to make connections to present-day societies.” Learners will be co-constructing the Lines of Inquiry with their peers, enabling more learner agency over what they are learning about during this Unit Of Inquiry. It is exciting to think that this inquiry could go in so many different directions across the school. We will keep you updated as we go!
SCHOOL NEWS AND INFORMATION
Pink Shirt Day
Learners are encouraged to take part this Friday 20 May 2022 as we Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.
This is a non-uniform day but learners are expected to wear pink on the day.
There is no donation required for this event.

He also competed on the weekend at Mid Island Champs and placed 2nd DMT and 2nd on Trampoline.
He qualified for Nationals on both weekends and in both disciplines which he will be attending in July.
Congratulations Boston and all the best for the Nationals competition!

Ministry of Education Survey
This survey is to support the preparation for changes to schools’ planning and reporting, as legislated in the Education and Training Act 2020, that come into effect on 1 January 2023.
Instead of a charter, schools and kura must publish a three-year Strategic Plan, an Annual Implementation Plan, and an Annual Report. Schools and kura must work in partnership with their communities to develop their plans so they reflect local needs and priorities.
The Ministry of Education is undertaking initial engagement and consultation with school communities. Your views will help decide what should become compulsory as regulations versus what should be guidance only, so that strategic plans are flexible enough to meet local needs.
Please click on the link below if you would like to take part in the survey,
