Teaching Construct 2.2: Innovative Applications of Content Knowledge
Last week we talked about the importance to content knowledge in teaching. While it is obviously important to know the content you are responsible for teaching, the best teachers are not always necessarily those with the most sophisticated content knowledge.
Teaching is both a science and an art, and a teacher cannot be effective unless they are able to integrate both. One may be a genius, but if they are unable to communicate their knowledge effectively, they cannot impart that knowledge onto others. Conversely, one may be an excellent orator, able to mesmerize an audience, yet he/she needs to have a knowledge of the subject matter, learning theories, and teaching strategies, as well as an understanding of the needs of his/her own students in order to gain the trust that is essential to creating an effective learning environment.
A teacher who balances both the science and art of teaching transforms teaching and learning with resources, technology, and physical space. They design learning progressions that engage students in real world application of content specific skills and disciplinary literacy. They use multiple data sources as evidence that all students are learning at high levels. These teachers are truly innovative.
