“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.” ― John Lydgate
I completed a newsletter last night and was feeling stressed because I was getting it out so late. I emailed the newsletter to myself to send out to everyone but must have failed to email it on. Then today happened and tonight while checking email again, I realized that the newsletter never went out. It's okay though because I feel like today brought me a message that maybe others need to hear as well.
Today I pleased some people. I worked on a grant that I am completing with the other administrators and left us in a good place to finish together this week before the deadline. I communicated with a few staff members that were seeking info and asking questions and I was able to give them what they needed. I talked to 2 parents on the phone today, one about eLearning and one about the FAFSA, and I was able to assist both with what they needed. I talked with several community members today about a pep session being planned and was again amazed by their support. I baked cookies for my kids this afternoon as a surprise treat for getting their eLearning finished, and as I finish this newsletter, dinner is in the oven waiting for Corey to get home from work so we can sit down together as a family and eat.
Today I didn't please some people. I had a couple of email exchanges with athletes who were not happy about the pep session. I got an ear full from a community member about her perceived lack of support because kids didn't order flowers for semi-formal. A vendor, who had an agreement with a former employee that we knew nothing about, was not happy when the new sponsor went a different route. And folding and putting away laundry didn't please any of my kids.
I spent quite a bit of time worrying about not pleasing all of the people and questioning whether or not I did or said the right things in these situations. While it may be easier if we could please all of the people, all of the time, trying to please everyone can actually bring some unintended consequences. While pleasing people is a worthy goal, trying to please everyone can result in a situation where no one is happy. Sometimes our quest to please everyone results in mediocrity across the board. In my opinion this outcome is worse than not pleasing everyone. If somebody is unhappy, I will listen to their concerns and see if they can be resolved. But when they cannot be reasonably resolved and fail to make everyone happy, then it may be time to agree to disagree and move forward.
When you try to please everyone all of the time, you will fail. While not everyone was pleased with me today, upon reflection, I stand behind my decisions and beliefs. Sometimes we need to take a step back and give ourselves a break. When we stop trying to please everyone all of the time we find peace.
