Next week your child will start bringing home a spelling list that includes 10 words that focus on 2 word families and high frequency words. On Friday, they'll be tested on all 10 words and will also have the opportunity to spell 2 challenge words. Challenge words follow the spelling pattern for the week and all students can/should attempt these words. Also, students will correct two sentences focusing on capitalization, spacing and punctuation.

Karate Belt Math

Last week we introduced the “Doubles and Near Doubles” strategy. I am attaching the Green Belt flash cards we are using in class. The best way to approach them is to have your child sort the cards into two piles: doubles and near doubles. Focus first on learning all the doubles then gradually mix in the near doubles. You can even encourage them to explain out loud to you “since I know 5+5=10 then I know 5+6 must be one more so it’s 11”

I hope you enjoy helping your student prepare for this at home. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Readers will have more experiences of success if they know these words. Dolch words are service words which are necessary for understanding sentences.
