Second Street Happenings
8th Grade Trip
The Washington Monument, The White House, Arlington Cemetery. These are just a few of the places that we’re going to on the eighth-grade trip.
The eighth-grade trip, originally from March 28th to April 2nd, is now from May 31 to June 4th. When asked why, Dr. Hensley stated that the switch was due to the government shutdown (thirty-three days and counting). The trip costs $699, although, as of Wednesday, $99 was paid for the forty-five students who signed their names.
The five-day trip, to Washington D.C. and Williamsburg, is with a company named WorldStrides, which is among some of the top travel organizations in the nation. We leave on the evening of May 31st and spend the night on a (charter) bus.
Multiple money raising efforts will take place over the next several months in the hopes of making the trip cost a minimum amount of money. However, the amount of money required to send the forty-five students is $31,455. Subtract the almost $5,000 necessary for registration, and the cost comes down to $27,000. Still a massive amount of money, but much lower than the original cost.
So far, two fundraising efforts have been announced, but several donors have been found, though the exact donation amounts and donors themselves have not yet (if they ever will) been announced. The two fundraising efforts, a two-week fundraiser with Great American Fundraising and a February Fundraiser Festival, will be open to all grades. According to Dr. Hensley, “the 8th grade will host separate dances for younger kids and for the 8th grade.”
With the date now moved back nearly two months, the 8th grade now has a much longer time slot for fundraising, preparations, organization, and other necessary, yet time-consuming, activities.
So far, no teachers have 100% confirmed their attendance on the trip, and with the date change, many teachers plans will likely have changed quite a bit.
When I asked Dr. Hensley what excited him most about the eighth-graders having the opportunity to go on this trip he said that he looks forward to the eighth-graders being able to experience D.C. and all of the monuments and history.
So now, the only question left is: Will you be going?

Y-Chapter Corner
by Campbell S., Ella S., Colin P., Eli C., and Vance M.
Welcome to the Y-Chapter Corner. We will be updating you on what's going on with our Y-Chapter. 5 of the members of this chapter will be writing articles on what we are doing in our chapter to inform parents and readers. Our organization goes to programs such as KYA, KUNA, GFI, and other YMCA sponsored programs throughout the year. Our Chapter is for students in 7th and 8th grade. Our two upcoming events are KUNA and a canned goods drive for the Simon House.
The Y-Chapter is taking donations for the Simon House Canned Food Drive. This drive will begin on February 1st and end of February 15th. We will be taking items such as canned fruits/vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, soups, non-perishable items, and wholemeal items (Hamburger Helpers, etc.) We also ask for students that are apart of the Y-Chapter to bring in boxes to give to teachers so we can collect the donated items.
From March 3-5, our chapter will be attending the KUNA, or Kentucky United Nations Assemble, convention. This is a great opportunity for students to work on public speaking, learning about other countries, and interacting with students from around Kentucky. Students have the opportunity to be doorkeeper, sponsors, flag bearers, chairs/clerks, security council, and a delegate.
This Friday if you will be attending KUNA there will be a $50 deposit due. KUNA is a great experience for anyone. When you are there you will be put into different commits. We get to hear bills about the different counties and vote to pass or defeat that bill. It is also a great time to meet and make new friends for all over Kentucky. An have a great learning experience away from school, that is really fun but educational.
Opinions
Game Time Rewards
I think students at Second Street should get a reward if they finish all their work. They should get to be on games on their Chromebooks. Many students at Second Street get on random websites because they are bored. If we were allowed to play games as a reward, teachers could tell them that if they don’t what they’re supposed to do, they don't get game day. This will probably work so please try this.
True Friendship
by Allena P.
Let’s just get this straight; if you don’t like someone, do not lead them on and act like their friend. It wastes their time and yours and there is absolutely no point. If you hear something from someone that is unreliable, why even think it’s true and then spread it? I get that you may think that spilling the tea makes you cooler, but in reality, if someone finds out that the tea is fake or untrue then you will be called out for it and it won’t be good. If your friendship is falling out try your best to amend it and if it does not work then tell the friend and don’t act like your still a friend and then spread rumors about them.
If you hear something about somebody confront them about it before you tell your family or all your friends because word gets around fast even if it’s not true. When that person hears about the rumor that you, someone who they thought was their friend, spread a rumor about them or their family then it completely ruins their day. You may not have to deal with stuff like that but the people that do don’t deserve it at all. It would be better if you were upfront with your feeling and not keeping them in and then hurting someone because you created a rumor about them

Book vs. Movie: Dumplin’
by Audrey G.
Spoiler Alert!
I recently re-read the book Dumplin’ after watching the new Netflix movie. I read the book a few years ago, and once I heard that it was becoming a Netflix movie I decided to re-read it. I read it after I watched the movie and realized how different the two were.
Dumplin’ is a contemporary novel about Willowdean Dickson, the plus size daughter of a former beauty queen. She decided to enter the towns coveted pageant in order to stray from tradition and ends up with more on her plate than she expected.
While the movie was more accurate than some adaptations that I’ve seen, it still left out some very pivotal characters and scenes. For instance, the movie completely skipped over the character Mitch. He really helped Willowdean when it came to the pageant and he was her friend when she didn’t have anyone.
The movie also left out a lot of information about Willowdean’s on-again-off-again boyfriend, Bo. In the book, he has an excellent backstory and the movie completely ruins it. He is a much more two-dimensional character in the movie than in the book.
Willowdean’s fight with Ellen is watered down in the movie. In the book, there is a reason behind the fight and many things that led up their fight. Their fight in the movie has no reasoning and results in them doing different things during the pageant. Consequently, when they make up after their fight, that moment held less power.
During the pageant, Willowdean gets disqualified because she changed her talent. In the movie, she does a different talent than in the book and it is less meaningful. The movie changed the pageant so that it wasn’t as impactful.
All in all the movie was pretty good, but it wasn’t accurate. I loved the book, and I had high hopes for the movie, but it did not live up to expectations.
Fake Friends
by Makiya M.
Quit wasting my time
I get tired of fake friends
They’re unnecessary
Quit spilling the “tea”
It doesn’t help you in the long run
It only hurts others
And eventually you too
Stop being FAKE!
How to Be Outside
by Luke S.
Ways to be outside can change depending on the season and for someone who never leaves their house, it can be confusing so I will take the time out of my day to teach you how to go outside. Wear sunscreen in the summer, wear lots of warm clothes in the winter and don't wear lots of clothes when swimming.
To begin, what you should wear in summer? You should always short sleeve shirts and short pants so you don't overheat and die.
Secondly, wear lots of clothes in the winter because if you don't you will get frostbite and die. Wear two pairs of socks, boots, sweat pants with jeans, gloves/socks, a hat and three shirts.
Finally, don't wear lots of clothes when swimming because they will weigh you down and you could drown. Instead, wear shorts and if you are girl wear a bathing suit.

Why You Should Get ¨Fortnite: Save The World¨
Most people you meet have either played or know a person who has played Fortnite Battle Royale (Fortnite BR). But if you were to ask people if they play Fortnite: Save The World (Fortnite STW) the answer probably will be no. This is because Fortnite Save The World costs around $40 when not on sale and that it is because they are releasing it for free later in 2019. That may be true but Fortnite STW is an extremely fun game and can add so much more to the fun that Fortnite BR brings to the table. Lots Of Weapons Compared to BR, STW has so many more weapons. You can get so many different types of ARs, shotguns, snipers, explosives, and even melee weapons. You can even level them up and make them stronger, have more durability, and ultimately just better. One of my favorite guns I have in the game is a automatic shotgun Heroes, Survivors, and Defenders In STW you don’t have Skins like in BR, you have Heros, Survivors, and Defenders. Heroes are like Skins, but they have special abilities, Survivors are people you save from the “husks” (zombies), that then help you with stats and such. Defenders are people that you can place out in the game, give them a weapon and then they fight against the “husks” with you. Conclusion In short, Fortnite: Save the World is one of the greatest, most innovative games of our time, and it's underrated because of its much more popular counterpart Fortnite: Battle Royale. So I urge you to get Fortnite: Save The World.
Game Review: Car Dentist
by Anthony P.
This game takes place in the world of cars. Your job is to do dentistry on cars. There are different various cars and some have dirtier teeth. You clean the cars with different tools and you can make their teeth gold or silver. I give Car Dentist a 3.7/10 because it not a very difficult game for a middle schooler. It would probably be good for a kindergartener.
Things To Do Over Spring Break
By: Vance M., Eli C., and Will W.
Spring is right around the corner and that means warm air and lots of stuff to do. If you need an idea we can help with that.
Some things to do in the spring are,
Go to a water park - It’s like the beach, except without sand. They are a fun place to go to and have fun with your family.
Baseball - America’s pastime is a fun sport to play. You don't have to play a full game; you can play catch too.
Hit the Beach! - For many people, the beach is a place to chill while getting some sun.
Backyard Fun - Traveling is not the only way to have a great time with the family on vacation. Turn your backyard into your very own destination. You can play all types of different sports, such as ultimate Frisbee or volleyball or even put down a Slip N’ Slide.
Go to the movies
Read a book - Find a good book, they're like movies but in your head! (and on pages)
These are only some of the things you can do over spring break!

Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Helping Hands:
People are making fun of me for not having a phone. I have asked for a phone, but no one will get me one, and I want to stop being teased. HELP ME PLEASE!
Sincerely,
Phoneless
Dear Phoneless:
I don’t have a phone either, so I know how you feel. Maybe start saving up to buy yourself a phone. I hope this advice helped you.
Sincerely,
Miss Helping Hands

Dear Miss Knows-a-Lot:
I really like a girl and she likes me, but she is in a relationship and doesn’t want it to end, but wants to date us both instead. What should I do?
Sincerely,
It’s Complicated
Dear It’s Complicated:
This is a complicated situation, but I will do what I can to help. I don’t think that it is wise for her to date you both, so maybe just wait until the girl and her boyfriend break up to pursue her. If you really don’t feel like waiting for her, maybe find someone else to like. If that doesn’t work just get some ice cream and a romantic-comedy and move on.
Sincerely,
Miss Knows-a-Lot
