Kingston Secondary School Snapshot
June 2020
New school opening delayed - occupancy expected late November
Final construction of the Kingston Secondary School (KSS) site was delayed in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although provincial emergency orders were lifted in early May to allow construction to resume on the project, the mandatory work stoppage means the school site will not be ready to open to students in September 2020.
Since work resumed on the site in early May, the contractor has been working diligently to make up the lost weeks. The building is nearing 95 per-cent-completion. The interior of the second and third floors are almost finished, and work is concentrated on completing the inside of the main level. Work on the exterior site (parking lots, landscaping and the field/track) is well under way. The memorial garden located in the northern alcove has begun and sod will also soon be laid.
Despite this push, which will continue over the summer months, the school will not be completed and ready for occupancy until approximately late November. Assuming no further delays or disruption to the construction timeline, students and staff will move into the new school by the start of the second semester/term. The move must consider the cycle of the school year, and minimize the impact on learning and teaching. We will share information around the timing and logistics of the move once we are closer to occupancy.
Of course, all these timelines and tentative moves are dependent upon provincial and local public health directives related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the meantime, students and staff will remain at Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute (KCVI) and Module Vanier in September.
We know the various delays related to this project have been disappointing. We are excited, however, to be so close to welcoming students and staff into our new school. We hope to share an interior fly-through later this fall to allow everyone to see the incredible facilities inside the KSS site.
We appreciate your continued understanding and patience.
KCVI QECVI Legacy Project continues through school closures
By Joanne Whitfield, Co-ordinator, KCVI QECVI Legacy Project
In February, with the help of Emily Welsh, a recent graduate with a Masters of Museum Studies from University of Toronto who was hired with grant money from the Federal government and the City of Kingston, we finished the inventory of all the objects and documents that make up the historical collections of KCVI and QECVI.
With the inventory in hand, we could make some decisions about the final disposition of some items. Queen’s Archives will be accepting the bulk of the student and school document records including the roll books, student cards and various association meeting minutes. Before transfer to the Archives at Queens, we have been digitizing some of these records to put in our online museum. Our hope is that these documents will be of use to members of the public including those pursuing academic or genealogical research and to our own history teachers and their students as they explore our own history.
Other local, provincial and national museums and archives have been contacted to offer other items. Unique and iconic objects that we have the ability to store, or display at a museum standard, will go with us to Kingston Secondary School to be part of a small exhibit that celebrates and commemorates our two founding institutions.
We anticipate that the exhibits will cover our history as it pertains to; secondary education in Kingston, what it was like to be a student at various points since 1792, our military legacy, athletics and the performing arts.
We are working with a graphic designer to create museum standard displays that will educate our students, staff and visitors. We hope that the knowledge of the strong roots both KC and QE have in our community will help our students and staff create a vibrant new school community at Kingston Secondary School.

Important information for those transitioning from Grade 8 to 9
On behalf of the entire KCVI/KSS staff, we are so pleased to welcome incoming Grade 9 students and families to our school community for the upcoming school year!
We are planning an updated Grade 9 orientation program for our students, and we will continue to make adjustment KFL&A Public Health. Regardless of how the new school year looks, we are committed to welcoming and supporting your student through this important transition to high school. Our aim is to make sure every student starts the school year feeling comfortable and ready for the days ahead.
Below you’ll find a list of questions that you might have at this time. We will continue to communicate with you as new information becomes available. Our priority is to ensure a supportive and caring transition for all of our students into high school. We look forward to welcoming the students, and you, to our school community.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What building will students be attending in September?
We will start the 2020-2021 school year at KCVI on Frontenac Street. Construction at Kingston Secondary School was delayed early in the pandemic due to government restrictions, however, it has since resumed.
Will Grade 9s be allowed to tour the building, or participate in an orientation program before September?
We know that students are nervous about starting Grade 9, and we will help them learn their way around. Once we get approval from local public health officials, we will connect with families about tours, opportunities to meet teachers, and to meet our Link Crew Leaders (upper year mentors matched to small groups of Grade 9 students).
When will timetables for Grade 9s students be distributed?
With close to 240 student requests in Grade 9 (and close to 1,000 in the school), it takes some time each spring to build a timetable that can be staffed while optimizing the number of students getting their requests. We are pleased to share that next year’s timetable is coming along very well, and we are right on schedule with having it ready on our typical timeline. Grade 9 timetables are typically handed out as part of our August orientation. We will keep you posted on this year’s timeline, as this decision may be adjusted depending on the plans for our orientation program.
What if my child has an IEP?
This spring, our Grade 8-9 transition team met with each Grade 8 teacher about the educational needs for every incoming Grade 9 student, including accommodations and supports for students with IEPs. From here, our Learning Program Support teachers (LPS) take this information, and will review timetables for students with IEPs and help coordinate a smooth transition for these students into to high school. The IEPs are automatically transferred to us, and will be shared with all teachers who teach your child next year. The LPS teacher assigned to Grade 9 students will be in touch with families in the months ahead if you have any questions or concerns.
How do I know if my child will qualify for a school bus in September?
Please visit Tri-Board Student Transportation to determine your eligibility and apply for busing for September. Many of our students also walk, bike or take Kingston Transit.
Our family has moved. Who should we contact?
Please update your personal and contact information with your current school. We will rely on this information to send further communication between now and September.
Make an investment in a student’s future
Before students even begin post-secondary, and well before student assistances comes in, there are almost $700 in fees, which often determine whether or not a student can attend.
To ensure that all of our eligible students have access to a post-secondary dream, we have created the KSS Launch Fund to support all students in the next phase of their education.
Consider making a donation to help fund:
- School Supplies $50
- College Application $95
- University Application $150
- Textbooks $250
- Residence Deposit $500
- Tuition Deposit $500
- An amount of your choice
Please call 613.544.4811 if you have any questions, or for information on how to access the fund.
