Central Students Say "Thank You" to the Beech Grove Education Foundation

Central Elementary's music teacher, Mrs. Natalie Etter, was awarded a grant from the Beech Grove Education Foundation to fund the purchase of xylophones for her students. With the new xylophones, students will learn how to be part of a playing ensemble in class and in public performances. Mrs. Etter stated, "The addition of these instruments will allow more flexibility in the classroom so that enough instruments of varying sizes and sounds are available for all students."

Mrs. Etter's students wrote letters of appreciation (pictured below) to the Beech Grove Education Foundation Board to express their thanks for the new instruments.

Thanks, Beech Grove Education Foundation!

Natural Resources Class

Mr. Chris Kaufman's natural resources class took place outside one day last week to identify and determine the value of trees. According to Mr. Kaufman, "By measuring the tree trunk at 4.5 feet with a special tape measure that we have, you can estimate the diameter of the tree. Then, by observing its quality (alive or dead), identifying its species, and entering the GPS where it is located, you can determine the cash value of that tree. We collected measurements and samples so we can determine the species, enter the data into an app on the chromebooks, and get their cash value.

The value of the tree is important for 2 reasons. 1. It contributes to the value of the property if you are buying or selling it. 2. You may want to harvest the trees on your property for money.

Also being able to identify common Indiana trees is good information to have."

Photos of Mr. Kaufman and his class conducting the measurements are pictured below.

Send Us Your Hornet Highlights!

We know there are many, many positive stories about Beech Grove City Schools involving our students, teachers, staff, and programs that we don't always hear. If you have a positive story to share, please send the details to Melody Stevens, Community Relations Director, at mstevens@bgcs.k12.in.us. We also encourage you to send stories that include personal achievements of your child such as: attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, performing in a community play, earning Girl Scout badges, serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, etc., etc. You might just see your story in a future edition of the "Hornet Blast" or in one of our local south side newspapers. We want to celebrate our Hornets!
