Our Mission is Possible...with Teamwork!
- Dr. Paul Nehrig - Principal
- Mr. David Sanford - Assistant Principal
Dear Panthers,
We are very busy in February at Forest Lake! Here are just a few highlights:
February is Black History Month, when we learn about and honor the many contributions made by African Americans throughout history.
We conduct our annual parent, student, and staff Climate Survey during February.
We’re excited to host our 2nd Panther Parent Night of the year on February 13th from 4 – 7 p.m. I hope you’ll join us for hands-on games & activities, helpful information for helping students at home, shopping at the book fair, spaghetti dinner, and a performance by our Panther Ensemble! RSVPs are required by February 9th.
Many classes plan special activities for Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
February is Heart Health Month. Many Forest Lake faculty and staff members are renewing their New Year’s resolutions for a healthy heart in response to Superintendent Russell’s challenge to walk 10,000 steps at least 3x per week, or exercise the equivalent of 3 hours per week. I encourage you to join us and make a fitness resolution for your family during February! On February 23rd, Forest Lake will hold our annual Jump Rope for Heart, celebrating heart health and raising funds to support the American Heart Association.
With so much happening, it is important for you to stay connected with us at Forest Lake. Lots of great school info can be found on our website, http://myvolusiaschools.org/school/ForestLake, school happenings are posted on our Twitter account, @ForestLakeVCS, and coming soon, we’re launching our own Facebook page! Another easy way to connect is through the new (and FREE) VCS App, which allows you to ‘follow’ Forest Lake on your smart phone or tablet. The VCS App is an “all in one” portal where you can check the school calendar, receive notifications, monitor grades, view the school lunch menus, and so much more! Simply go to your App Store and search for ‘Volusia County Schools’. It’s easy and FREE!
Climate Survey
We need your input! Our annual Climate Survey is open now through February 28th. This anonymous, web-based survey provides us with valuable information as we develop our school improvement plans. You can access the survey through the following link:

KINDERGARTEN
January was such a BUSY month that it flew right by! The kindergartners returned from Winter Break all rested and ready to learn! We spent the month learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Social Studies. We read the books; Snowmen at Night and The Mitten in ELA. And in Math, we continued to practice adding and subtracting within 5. We had lots of fun with Literacy Week, donating books and learning about Service Animals. We wore our Wow Words and had LOTS of fun dressing up as our favorite storybook characters for the Literacy Parade. We went on a field trip to Blue Springs. We had lots of fun watching the manatees, eating lunch outside, and of course… playing on the playground! A huge shout-out to the parents that helped chaperone. We appreciate your help and were so happy to share this experience with you all!
Thanks for all you do!!!
FIRST GRADE
In February, we celebrate Black History month, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day. We will also begin learning about living and non-living things in science. First grade is planning a field trip to the Deland Reptile center on Thursday, March 8th. Consent forms will go home soon. The cost of the field trip is $14.00 for students and $7.00 for chaperones. All chaperones must have an approved volunteer form on file.
We are now at day 100 of 180 school days! Your child is more than half way through first grade and that much closer to becoming a second grader! We still have lots of work to do to ensure that your child is ready. Please continue to read daily and work diligently on mastering sight words as well as math facts. If your child already knows their sight words, challenge them to learn how to spell them. Reading daily with your child is extremely important and contributes greatly to improved fluency. Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Improved fluency, in turn, contributes greatly to improved comprehension. Homework is due on Fridays. Please check for corrections, and neatness before your child turns it in.
SECOND GRADE
Second grade- will be going on a field trip to the Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences on February 16. The cost is $15. If you have not yet sent in your money and permission slip, please send as soon as possible so we can reserve a seat for your child.
We had such a fun time learning about how matter changes. Making Jello and toast to see the physical change was so rewarding. Currently we are making line plots and picture graphs in Math which the students like to do.
Ms. Paradiso shared with 2nd graders her slides of Haiti- the land, how students go to school, the essential school supplies they are lacking. It was quite an eye opener for our children. We have been reading about children who have left their home country to live in the United State and brainstorming why they would move.
February is a different type of Book-It project for all second graders. They will be choosing to read and research about a famous African American who has made a positive contribution to our world, or read and research about a president. All the information will be sent home and the materials that THEY need to complete the project They will receive two (2) grades for this- one in ELA and one in Social Studies so DO YOUR BEST!
Valentines are acceptable but they will only be distributed on Feb. 14th and no sooner. It can be very distracting, as you can imagine, so exchanging Valentines is only done of Feb. 14th. Be sure to include Valentine’s for every child in the class. We are wishing you a pleasant and enjoyable day with your child on President’s Day, February 19th
FOURTH GRADE
4th grade has been having a lot of fun viewing the students' social studies fair projects and listening to their presentations. The county social studies fair will take place on Saturday, February 24th at Deland High School. Your child’s teacher will let you know if your child’s project has been chosen to be on display at the county social studies fair. A St. Augustine interest letter was sent home a couple weeks ago to see what students and parents would be interested in attending a field trip to St. Augustine at the beginning of May. The cost would be about $58 per person. Please return this form to your child’s teacher as soon as possible so that we can push forward with the field trip plans.
FIFTH GRADE
This past week 5th grade got the amazing opportunity to learn about Pioneers at the Baberville Pioneer Art Settlement. We churned butter, made candles, loomed rugs, and even fed some goats and donkeys! Fifth grade continues to be a blast as we close our past units and begin just as exciting ones like Volume, Force and Motion, the American Revolution, and Theme! To supplement our curriculum will be participating in a Derby Day! All students were given Derby Cars to take home, shape, and decorate. We will be racing these cars on March 2nd please don’t forget to send your students car in. If you and your student need help completing the car, please do not hesitate to call or message your child’s teacher. We cannot wait to see their AMAZING cars! Be on the lookout for more information as 5th grade continues to plan our end of the year field trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Over and out, parents we can’t wait to tell you about everything we have learned next month!
