Update from Sugar Land MS - February 24, 2020
This and That for the Week of 2.24.2020
We had a terrific turnout for our Fifth Grade Parent Night this past week, highlighted by great performances by our students in Kickstart, Theater, Orchestra, Choir, and Band. We appreciate all of our teachers and staff who attended to help support our incoming fifth graders. This week we look forward to hosting fifth graders when they visit the campus! We had a challenging morning this past Thursday when we had a partial power outage. Our students and staff handled the inconvenience well and are to be commended. Part of being a life-long learner, an attribute of the Profile of a Graduate, is that you have to take life as it comes and be flexible, ready for anything. Our students and staff showed that they are!
Please make sure your child turns in their course selection sheet, signed by a parent, to their social studies teacher on Monday (tomorrow).
In other news you should have received notification that Progress Report 6 (PR6) is available for viewing in Skyward Family Access. Term 3 (T3) ends a week from this Friday -- on March 6.
We are already making plans for next school year, and our fabulous PTO has once again made arrangements for ordering school supplies online. You can read more about school supplies for 2020-21 below or by visiting our campus website.
Be sure to join us for our Open House / iFest (International Festival) on Tuesday, March 3. You can read more about it below or on our campus web page. NEW THIS YEAR! International/Cultural Fashion Show -- We invite families to participate in our first-ever culture & fashion show! Please visit this link to find out more and to let us know that you want to be a part of this excited new event!
Have a great week!

School Supplies for 2020-21
The SLMS PTO wants to make it easy for you to get your child's school supplies for the 2020-21 school year, and they have partnered with Teacher Tailored / SchoolKidz to provide a convenient, cost-effective way to purchase supplies for next year. All of the supplies for your child's grade level are included, based off of our 2020-21 SLMS school supply list, which was created by the teachers. The only items not included are things like PE uniforms and specialty items needed for certain elective classes. PE uniform sales will begin in late July in a separate process. A list of items needed for specialty electives classes will be shared by your child's teacher once school starts. Visit our School Supply Ordering Webpage for all the details. Deadline to order is May 28, 2020.
Fifth Grade Information
Fifth Grade Student Visits to SLMS are this week!
- February 26 (RDE, LVE, BPE)
- February 27 (SME, TWE)
Clothing Donation Bin
If you have already started on your spring cleaning and have some clothing that still has some life left in it, please consider donating them through the use of our Clothing Donation Bin that is in the east parking lot. Our PALS and Teen Leadership students benefit from them, as we get a monthly check from the collection of clothing that is based on the weight of the clothing donated. You would be helping in at least three ways: 1) clearing out your home, 2) helping our PALs and Teen Leadership students, and 3) helping someone else with your still-usable clothing!
Safety Reminders
- Car riders may be dropped off or picked up ONLY in the front circle drive. No drop-offs or pick-ups along Seventh Street or in a parking lot
- No left-hand turns out of any driveway or any parking lot during school zone hours. We are working with the City of Sugar Land to have signage replaced that had been removed during the reconstruction of Seventh Street
- Due to the proximity of City Park to the SLMS property line on the west side of campus, please note that students are subject to school discipline for misbehavior that occurs at the park because the park is within 300 feet of our mutual boundary line. We provide supervision outside in the morning starting at 7:50 AM, but we also now provide supervision until 4:50 PM outside. Please have your child wait for you at the benches on the car rider line, in the alcove at the main entrance, or at the tables that are in the courtyard near the flagpole
Older, But Important Items
Food and Other Deliveries for Students During the School Day
Recently, we have had a significant number of deliveries for students, particularly for lunches, through organizations such as Uber Eats, Grubhub, and Door Dash. Unfortunately, we cannot accept deliveries for students from these and similar companies. Parent drop-offs are fine, but not delivery companies. This is because we cannot verify that the items delivered came from parents. Student-initiated orders, even though they should not have their devices in their possession during the day, will also be turned away.
Additionally, please remember that we cannot accept parent drop-offs of food for group distribution. This for things like pizzas, cupcakes, etc. Parents will only be able to drop off food for their children.
Last, please do not have deliveries of balloons, stuffed animals, or floral arrangements sent to the school. Thank you for your understanding.
Immunization Update from Nurse Lincoln - Sixth Graders
Your child did or will receive the Tdap and the Meningitis vaccines at their 11 year-old check-up. Please provide proof of these immunizations to the clinic when your child gets them. These are the required shots for 7th grade and providing them as soon as you get them will keep your child compliant! You may email it to angela.lincoln@fortbendisd.com, fax it to (281) 327-8745 or drop it off in the clinic. For any other medical concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic at (281) 634-8745.
Yearbooks on Sale! - $40
Yearbooks are on sale for $40. To order, simply visit https://www.balfour.com/student-info?smi=71485. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Childs at Molly.Childs@fortbendisd.com.
Laptop Lending Library
We are pleased to announce the re-launch of our Laptop Lending Library. Students will have the opportunity to check out a touch-screen laptop, with carrying case and charging cable, for two weeks, just they would check out a book. Some paperwork is required to be completed by parents, first, however. Please visit our Laptop Lending Library page or contact Mr. Sinclair, our Librarian or Mrs. Smith, our Library Aide, for more details.
Parent Volunteers
We love parent volunteers! Please renew your annual Criminal History Authorization (CHA) by visiting the district website. These reset on July 1 each year. Then, please join the PTO by visiting their website at www.slmspto.org.
