PAST PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Happy December IAHPERD Members! I hope this note finds you all well as your 2016 winds down. It has been a very, very busy year as I’m sure you can all relate.
I wanted to take a moment to update you on a couple of things happening within the IAHPERD organization. We are making significant strides to improve your member benefits as we streamline the processes and governance. Members now have access to equipment grants, travel scholarships for professional development, and limited liability coverage, on top of all other functions of the organization. This being said, we are looking for your input. How can this organization better serve you? In the next month, you will be receiving an IAHPERD Member Survey to offer you a vehicle to provide feedback to the IAHPERD leadership. Please take advantage of this opportunity to help us understand the needs of our members.
IAHPERD is also delving much deeper into Advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. In the past few months we have spent time with the School Administrators of Iowa and the Iowa Association of School Boards to raise the awareness of PhysEd and IAHPERD. I would consider these to both be successful ventures. In December, the IAHPERD leadership was invited to attend a work session with Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise and Deputy Director Dave Tilly to discuss the future of ESSA in Iowa and how Health Ed and PhysEd fit in to the grand picture of the Well Rounded Student. It was excellent to have a seat at that table, and it appeared to be a very successful meeting. Many excellent points were brought forward, and the DOE seemed to have great intentions to bring Health & PhysEd into solid standing.
Speaking of ESSA, I have spent a fair amount of time in the last few months doing quite a bit of research on the new legislation. It is incredibly fascinating how many working parts exist. If you are not familiar with ESSA and how it will impact Health & PhysEd, I strongly encourage you to visit the SHAPE America resource center at: http://www.shapeamerica.org/advocacy/essa.cfm/. Now is the time to take action, and the window is closing rapidly. One of the greatest concerns currently is the amount of federal funding for the ESSA Programing. Later in the newsletter, you will find a link to send your Senators and Representatives a letter advocating for more funding. Please take the 90 seconds it takes to fill that out and write your representatives. At this point, volume in communications is a critical element.
As always we are always looking for people to serve in the IAHPERD leadership, through committees and elected positions. If you or one of your colleagues would be interested, please contact me!
I hope you have a great, restful, and safe Winter Break. I look forward to hearing from you, and I look forward to a GREAT 2017.
My Best
Ben Robison
IAHPERD Immediate Past-President
