Egg Harbor Township High School
Week of January 16, 2022
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Greetings,
Despite having a shortened week(being off Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King), the high school had a jam packed and exciting week!
We started Tuesday morning, January 18th, with our student club “Future Business Leaders of America” (FBLA). These students, under the guidance of their advisors, Ms. Duff and Ms. Zisa hosted a virtual summit. It included 12 chapters throughout the state. Our very own Krisha Patel, who is Vice President of the State Chapter, opened the summit and welcomed everyone. Krisha facilitated the summit and also welcomed guest speakers, State Senator Vince Polistina and EHT Mayor Paul Hodson. What a fabulous experience.
On Wednesday, January 19, the High School hosted an open house for the middle school 8th graders. The event was in person and heavily attended. It was our opportunity to showcase EHTHS and share all the offerings we have from academies to athletics and activities and everything in between! Parents sat through presentations from Ms. Elko, our Director of Guidance, and all the content supervisors as well as Mr. Kevin Rutledge, the Director of Athletics and Activities. Parents also had the opportunity to tour the classrooms in F wing and visit the gym where all supervisors had an area for questions and there were displays of many activities, clubs and athletics. There truly is something for everyone!
Thursday, January 20, Ms. DiSalvio had an opportunity to partner with Ms. Portnoy and present an awesome Middle School and High School Orchestra presentation which incorporated students from our high school dance classes. Some songs were from West Side Story and very entertaining.
In the academic world, over 100 senior students completed the testing for Seal of Biliteracy in 11 different languages and 5 of our seniors tested in 2 languages. This is absolutely amazing! Can’t wait for their results. I am sure with their knowledge and their teachers encouragement they all did a wonderful job!
We have 24 students who have applied to study abroad this summer. Best wishes to them! Looking forward to hearing about where they are going to go.
Our Academy of Law and Business (ALAB) had a competition on Friday, January 21, during the school day in a virtual setting. Students participated in a “Consumer Bowl.” It is
an educational competition for high school students across the state. Five students from our school will be participating virtually. Our students have been preparing for months and are excited about the competition.
Next week on January 28, we will have our National Honor Society induction ceremony at 6:30 in the auditorium. Individuals will be notified and their parents are certainly invited to attend.
Some home athletic events you may enjoy:

1/24 Swimming v Holy Spirit @4:00
1/26 Girls basketball v Mainland @ 5:30

Until next week, have a wonderful weekend! Stay safe, be well, continue to dream of the possibilities ahead of us, be happy and smile at someone!

Seal of Biliteracy
Good luck to Seniors at the High School who are completing the assessment for the NJ Seal of Biliteracy. The lengthy assessment measures students’ proficiency level in the language they’ve been studying or in their home language. This year 100 seniors are taking the assessment in 11 different languages: Arabic, French, German, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Latin, Polish, Spanish, and Vietnamese. 7 of the seniors are taking the assessment twice, as they are multi-lingual. In order to graduate with the Seal of Biliteracy students must also demonstrate their proficiency in English by meeting one of the NJDOE approved assessments for graduation. Special thanks to Mr. Dean Tommi in the IT Department for his assistance in setting up the computers so that students could type in languages that use different alphabets and for making sure everything went smoothly.

Chris Singleton, professional baseball outfielder, sportscaster and renowned inspirational speaker understands the importance of resilience. He has spoken to over 100,000 students and educators across the world with his message that “Love is Stronger Than Hate.” His talks focus on issues of diversity and inclusion, forgiveness, and overcoming adversity, following the loss of his mother in the 2015 Mother Emanual Church Tragedy in South Carolina.
The High School has adopted a new bullying-prevention program for this school year!
#DAY1--a staff and student-led philosophy that will serve to foster a building-wide atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.
This program was started a few years ago in Bergen County by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and has gained momentum throughout the state and country for use in schools, community groups, workplaces, and sports teams. We even have 3 of our own students who were selected by the foundation as leaders for this initiative!
The premise is simple: the adults in the building make a “declaration statement” about behavior that is expected, as well as behavior that is unacceptable, and we all pledge to conduct ourselves accordingly. This includes seeking help when we witness unacceptable behavior occurring.
This notion is called being an #Upstander.
Has your student taken their #Upstander Pledge yet?!?
Have them sign into their school account and click here! 😊
