From the desk of our Proud Principal

Dear Bunker Hill Families,

We have so much to celebrate in these first few short weeks of school!

  • We had such an amazing school wide field trip to Conner Prairie!
  • The Indiana Bicentennial Commission reviewed our application and officially endorsed Bunker Hill Elementary School as an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project.
  • BLUE, the Colts mascot, came to Bunker Hill to teach our kids about how to save energy in a presentation entitled, “Blue is the new Green."
  • Our Indiana bulletin board timeline is taking shape! Each grade was assigned a 30 year time period of Indiana’s history and once the timeline is completed, you will be able to walk and learn Indiana’s history.
  • Our amazing PTO hosted their first movie night!

Speaking of our amazing PTO, they are looking for both volunteers and sponsors for our 4th annual Walk-A-Thon. If you can assist, please contact Stephanie Rigler at stephanierigler@yahoo.com with any questions, or visit bunkerhillpto.com for more information. In addition to our Walk-A-Thon, our PTO supports our school in so many ways. I would encourage you to come to our PTO meetings, visit their Facebook/Instagram/website, and become active in our PTO. We have so many different roles and needs, I am sure there is an opportunity for you to volunteer regardless of your schedule.

We take pride at Bunker Hill in providing your child both a world class academic and rich life experience. In September, our students will also participate in the Watershed shoe collection, Pinwheel of Peace Day, Franklin Central Homecoming parade, College Go! Week and our Veteran’s Day program. We are also excited to announce that we just registered our school to participate in the country’s largest mock presidential election. We will set up voting booths on the Monday before the presidential election. Our students will vote in a mock election that includes 5 to 6 million students from across the country. The last three student mock elections correctly predicted the president!

As you can see from what your child has already experience this year and a small glimpse into the next couple months, not only are we proud of our “A” Letter grade and 4 Star School recognition from the Indiana Department of Education, but we also focus on providing your child with rich experiences. We are proud to be #BHBulldogs!

Remember to practice reading every night and rote math facts and make it a GREAT September!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kent Pettet

September is an exciting month at the Hill! We have lots of special events planned. Please see below for more details!

Waterstep

The week of September 12, we will be hosting a shoe drive to benefit the Waterstep Organization. Waterstep provides clean water for underdeveloped communities. We will be accepting new or gently used shoes. The grade level that brings in the most shoes will earn an extra recess!

College Go! Week

The week of September 19 is College Go! Week. This is a week designed to get kids excited about going to college. At Bunker Hill, we will be featuring different Indiana colleges and universities through the week to start our Bulldogs thinking about the future! Then, on Friday (September 23), all Bunker Hill students are encouraged to wear their favorite (or their family's favorite!) college spirit wear. Take advantage of this week by chatting with your child about what it means to go to college, the awesome things that can happen in college, and all the possibilities that a college degree can bring! Learn more here: http://www.facebook.com/LearnMoreIN/

Homecoming Parade

The Franklin Township Homecoming Parade will take place at 5:30 p.m. on September 22 in Wanamaker. This is a wonderful community event! Feel free to come on out and enjoy the festivities.

On Thursday, September 29, the Marion County Health Department will be at Bunker Hill to perform vision screenings. All 3rd and 5th graders, students who are new residents of Marion County, and children from other grades suspected of having a vision problem will be screened this day. Please mark your calendars for this important day. If your child receives a referral, please schedule an appointment with an eye care professional by the end of 2016 for optimal academic success. Parents who do not wish for their student to participate in the screening may send a note to Mrs. Knox, the school nurse, by Tuesday, September 27.

  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am must be signed in at the front office.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm. Teachers need time to make arrangements.
  • Attendance- Please review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.

Car Rider Reminder

Car Rider Participants:

Safety is our main focus in our car rider line. Please remember to have your child exit/enter the driver's side of your vehicle during drop off/pick up. If you have to use the passenger's side, a staff member must accompany your child to the sidewalk. A student cannot exit the passenger side of a vehicle without staff assistance.

We appreciate your patience when dropping off and picking up your child. This ensures the safety of all our students and staff.

Please share this safety information with anyone that may pick up or drop off your student.

REMIND

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.

2016 Walk-A-Thon and Bicentennial Poster Contest

The Bunker Hill PTO is hosting an Indiana Bicentennial poster contest leading up to our 4th annual fall walk-a-thon. The contest is designed to promote and celebrate the history of our great state. Posters will be on display at our walk-a-thon on Friday, September 16.

Kindergarten through grade 5 students are invited to participate in the contest. Entries are due to the front office by Wednesday, September 14.

Contest rules: How would you describe Indiana to someone who has never visited our state? Draw a poster of official or unofficial symbols that represent Indiana. Maybe you want to include official symbols, such as the flag of Indiana, a cardinal (the state bird), a peony (the state flower), or the state seal. Or, maybe you want to share unofficial symbols that Indiana is well-known for, like beautiful state parks, basketball fame, the Indianapolis 500, or local farming communities.

Use a standard poster board to make a creative, colorful poster that tells something about Indiana and its history. Posters will be judged on craftsmanship, creativity, and originality. Winners will be announced on the day of the walk-a-thon. Be sure to include your name and grade level on the back of your poster.
