Girls
On Tuesday night, the Lady Brickies hosted an NCC double-dual meet with Kankakee Valley and Lowell for the 1ST EVER competition in the new Hobart High School Aquatic Center. The much anticipated opening of the new facility was something special ... even during a pandemic with Lake County identified as RED by COVID metrics, the Lady Brickies SHINED in front of a limited crowd of parents/guardians!! Our girls WON the 1st ever race in their new home and never looked back on their way to VICTORIES over both Lowell (126-54) and KV (121-62)! A quartet of seniors - Emma Wright, Ana Tepavcevich, Alivia Ahner & Delaney O'Brien - will someday answer the question of who won the 1st race in the Aquatics Center for all those Brickie sports history buffs!
Overall, Hobart won 8 of the next 11 events against the Red Devils & Kougars after the FEARSOME FOURSOME cruised to victory in that 1st event to set the tone for the rest of the night!

Boys
Tuesday's 1st ever meet in the HHS Aquatics Center was coed as our boys joined the girls in facing KV & Lowell. With only 9 swimmers and 3 divers on the roster, you could say that the Brickies wore the "underdog" tag on Tuesday night ... something they'll need to get used to as the season progresses. The Brickies swam extremely well for their 1st time out this winter and got a LIFETIME BEST performance from 2019 STATE QUALIFIER junior Ethan Ferba in 1 meter diving! Our boys fell to both KV (61-101) and Lowell (52-98) on the night, but showed a lot of potential and are clearly putting in the WORK WORK WORK to be their best!
Here are results from Tuesday's meet:
200 Free - 4th = sophomore Noah Bailey
200 IM - 2nd = junior Nathaniel Mamushe
50 Free - 4th - junior Ethan Sy, 6th = freshman Brett Herrin, 7th = freshman Luke Weinman
Diving - 1st - junior Ethan Ferba, 2nd = junior Hayden Maggio, 3rd = freshman Ethan Robles
100 Fly - 2nd = Mamushe, 4th = Bailey
100 Free - 2nd = sophomore Owen Finch, 5th = Sy
500 Free - 2nd = Finch
200 Free Relay - 3rd = Finch, Bailey, Sy & Mamushe
100 Breast - 3rd = Herrin
Taking just 10 boys to Knox on Thursday, the Brickies once again were out-manned in numbers but not in heart! In just their 2nd meet of the season, the Brickie boys were OUTSTANDING only to fall a heartbreaking 3 points short and fall 58-61. WHAT AN EFFORT!!! Ferba & classmate Hayden Maggio were MAGNIFICENT on the board in going 1-2 ... clearly they both have a license to DIVE :) ... and sophomore Noah Bailey also grabbed glory with a THRILLING 1st place finish in the 200 Free, winning by just 0.26 seconds!!
Here are results from Thursday's meet:
200 Medley Relay - 2nd = Finch, Herrin, Mamushe & Sy
200 Free - 1st = Bailey
200 IM - 2nd = Mamushe
50 Free - 2nd = Sy, 4th = Weinman, 5th = Herrin
Diving - 1st - Ferba, 2nd = Maggio

Wrestling
On Saturday, the Brickies made the short trip over to River Forest to roll around a bit in a triple dual with the host Ingots and Calumet. In the 1st round, Hobart squared off against the Warriors and DOMINATED with a 66-12 VICTORY!! After RF also defeated Calumet, it was time for the CHAMPIONSHIP round! Starting at 195, the Ingots won the 1st 4 matches to move ahead 21-0. Hobart junior Trevor Schammert pinned his opponent in just 25 seconds at 113 lbs to get the Brickies on the board and our boys would be VICTORIOUS in 7 of the last 9 weight classes to earn a hard fought 38-33 WIN!!
The theme this year for our grapplers is #Twilight Zone on the #BrickRode. To stick with that theme, here are some notables from the #Highlight Zone on Saturday:
Sophomore Allan Turich and freshmen teammates Kaden Miller-Lane, Jacob Sparks & Aiden Olague all earned their 1st career varsity wins!
Junior Trevor Schammert went 2-0 with 2 pins @ 113 lbs
Senior Jaden Skimehorn went 2-0 with 1 pin & 1 tech fall @ 120 lbs
Junior Donovan Ruiz went 2-0 on the day @ 126 lbs
Senior Cristian Padilla went 2-0 with 1 pin & 1 tech fall @ 132 lbs
Sophomore Jonny McGill went 1-0 with a pin
Sophomore Gavin Miller-Lane went 2-0 with a pin @ 152 lbs
Junior Jake Simpson went 2-0 with 2 pins @ 182 lbs
The Brickies are 2-0 and will host NCC rival Lowell on Thursday for our 1st home meet of the season!! Either work hard or you might as well quit ... that's word because you know ... Can't Touch This!

Basketball
On Tuesday, Hobart welcomed Porter County neighbor Portage to the Friendly City for a non-conference game. It was great to hear the basketball bouncing in the gym after a 3 week absence ... unfortunately, it was not great to hear the nets swish again and again for the visiting Indians. Portage seemingly made every shot early and jumped out to a 34-12 halftime lead. The Lady Brickies tried to claw back into it in the 3rd quarter, but just never could quite get much going and ultimately lost a tough one 75-24. Senior Lexi Williams and sophomore NIko Latinovic each scored 6 points to lead the offensive attack for Hobart. Each also added a team-high 6 rebounds. Credit the Portage defense ... their aggressive style bottled up super sophomore Asia Donald and limited her to just 4 points, well below her nearly 17 ppg average.
Friday night, the Lady Brickies were back in action against NCC rival Munster. This one was a BATTLE right from the tip-off! Hobart won the tip and after some efficient ball movement, Asia Donald BURIED a 3 from the right wing!! Donald scored again a few possessions later to give our girls an early 5-3 lead, but Munster would fight back and hold a 16-7 edge after 8 minutes of play. The Lady Brickies came out aggressive in the 2nd quarter ... playing even until the closing moments and went into the half trailing 27-15. The 2nd half featured more of the same ... Hobart giving everything they had to contend! The game was never really out of reach, but unfortunately, the Lady Mustangs had too much offense and won 56-31 in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate. Donald returned to form with 17 points to lead all Lady Brickie scorers ... Williams added 7 and freshman Jesse Neace returned to the lineup to tack on 5.
The Lady Brickies are currently 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in NCC play. No rest for the weary this week as Hobart will be in action 3 more times ... Tuesday @ Illiana Christian, Friday @ KV, and Saturday afternoon they will return home to face Calumet. LET'S DO THIS GIRLS!!!
