A Message From the Principal
In Parshat Shoftim we learn that the King of Israel is obligated to “write for himself two copies of the Torah” and “he will read it all the days of his life, so he can learn to fear God, to keep all the words of this Torah and these statutes, to perform them” (Devarim 17: 18-19). Rabbi Sacks, in the essay on this week’s parsha from his book Lessons In Leadership, learns from this pasuk that “Leaders learn…. They may not delegate away the task of thinking, reading, studying, and remembering” (p 265). When reflecting on our professional growth and collaboration during the days before school began, one of the teachers remarked, "I love that we're learning about how students learn rather than about how teachers should teach”. There are two powerful parts of that statement. The first is “we are learning.” We, the educational professionals at Kohelet Yeshiva Lab School, are constantly learning. Never was this more true than the past three weeks when we learned about each other, about the process of learning, and how we can best facilitate that process in our learning environment. The second is “how students learn rather than about how teachers should teach”. We focus on how something is learned and utilize that process to inform our instructional decisions. That is important both in terms of the learning process in general for all students, as well as the fact that our teachers have been getting to know each individual student and how they learn so that they can plan their instruction to help facilitate their learning. Being a learner and constantly thinking of the learning process at all times is what makes teaching at Kohelet Yeshiva Lab School so unique. Employing this distinctive approach affords us the incredible opportunity to make a tremendous professional investment each and every day, and it helps our teachers further solidify their position as true educational leaders. A Glimpse Into Our Day!
Opening Block
Students arrive at school and transition into their day. They do this by completing their morning routine which consists of greeting the teachers, putting their belongings in their cubby, and moving their name card from the opening chevra location to their chevra meeting location. Students then enjoy time socializing with friends while playing with the sensory table, play doh, legos, or board games.
Chevra Check In/ Morning Meeting
Students meet in their chevrot to start their day with a morning meeting that includes a message, a game/song, calendar, and a share experience. This is when direct instruction of social emotional skills or community conversations take place. Teachers also use this time to review a student's agenda for their independent work block so they are ready to begin their day academically after tefillah.
