Updates from the Principal

Good Afternoon Firebird Nation Families -

Happy Friday! We made it to the end of Week 2 of our 100% return to learn. Our 2nd season of intramural sports had some competition this week. It was great to see our Firebirds out on the fields playing football, in the gym on the volleyball court, and in our Wrestling Room for fitness camp. Our athletes are learning fundamental skills and techniques that will help them in their future years of athletic competition. Keep up the great effort Firebirds!

Our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony date has been set. 8th Grade families should mark their calendars for Thursday, May 27th. We have several requirements that we must follow to align with the county's expectations. We have sent a letter to all 8th grade families today and will link this information in a section below. It is possible that some changes may occur between now and May 27th, so we plan to keep you informed as these plans become more solidified.

As this week progressed, we have noticed that some situations occurring were amplified through things taking place on student social media accounts. In looking into these situations, it has become apparent to me that there are so many new social media apps, many that I have never heard of, that students are putting on their phones. Some of these apps have places where students friend people they do not even know and/or post items anonymously. The technological age continues to evolve, and because of this, I strongly encourage parents to know what apps their students have on their devices and what they are posting on social media. Deputy Murphy continues to talk with students about the legal aspects of what can happen when inappropriate things are posted. We have noticed that through the pandemic, students have become even more reliant on their devices and their need for social connection has fueled some of these new applications. Keep an eye on what your students do with all these new apps.

We continue to have our no electronic device policy in place. So, students should keep their phones out of sight and out of mind. Students found to be using their devices on school grounds will have them taken and parents will be called. Continued offenses will require parents to come to the school to pick up these devices. With being back to 100%, we want students to interact with each other, get back to having face to face conversations, and build positive relationships. Our Sources of Strength team continues to plan lessons and campaigns through our advisory classes to help students grow in these areas. We are making this a priority as the more we can do to help everyone talk, problem solve, and listen to each other, that the better we will all become.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! It is hard to believe we only have 7 weeks to go! Let's all work together to finish this year strong!

Sincerely,

Brian Smith
