Plate Tectonics!

The 3 layers of Earth:

The 3 layers of earth are Core, Mantle and Crust. The Core is important because it is our support, the mantle is important because It is our source to lava which creates volcanoes to erupt and make new land. Finally the Crust is important because that is where all of our land is.

Continental Drift

Continental Drift is the gradual movement of our continents over a long amount of time.

The Hypotheses for Continental Drift

This was all originally first made by Abraham Ortelius in 1596 and fully developed by Alfred Wegener in 1912.

Evidence For Continental Drift

The 2 types of evidence used for continental drift were that it looked like the earths continents could be put together like a puzzle and animals/fossils with the same dna were found half way across the world.

Sea Floor Spreading

Sea floor spreading occurs at mid ocean ridges where new oceanic crust is formed from volcanic activity and gradually moves away from the ridge.

Convection Currents

This helps the plates actually move instead of them floating on the surface.

Theory of Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics is the theory that the outer rigid layer of the earth is divided into a couple of dozen plates that move around across the earth's surface, almost like peices of ice on a lake.

Ring of Fire

The Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean
